He fled Italy as soon as he retired to go to a normal, or rather advanced, civilized country, like the France that I have known for 40 years. I feel very comfortable and would also gladly pay taxes here, but the agreement between Italy and France obliges me to still pay them in Italy (including regional and municipal taxes!!!) even though I have been living here for four years now, an AIRE member of course, and I no longer have any economic interest in Italy. Appreciate the local diversity, the simplicity of the people, almost a 60s climate not yet irreversibly disfigured. I hope that the Portuguese do not allow themselves to be overwhelmed by the mega-mass tourism that is ruining so many wonderful places, a true social and environmental tsunami that overwhelms everything in its wake. So far they have been quite successful.

I don't want to be trivial but this hypocritical, fraudulent and crafty "Italianness" that has become mainstream for 20 years now has made me ashamed of being part of it, I fought it every day by going against the grain but it was like emptying the sea with a teaspoon. Now I'm really tired and I want to immerse myself in more "normal" and suitable social realities. Hence the decision to leave Italy.
