"So, my time in South Africa was pretty amazing, actually. I was there for almost ten years, from December 1997 until the end of 2006. I first landed in Cape Town and lived in Rondebosch until I moved to Paarl in December 2006, living in Paarl East and then Charleston Hill.
I originally went there to study at Varsity College, and then I did some programs at Apprentice Master and Eta. But I also ended up working at the University of Cape Town ? UCT ? as a junior administrator from 1999 until 2006. But honestly, a huge part of my life there was sports. I was really into it. I played basketball, indoor soccer, badminton, and squash. But even more than playing, I got involved in the sports administration side of things at UCT. I was actually the manager for a bunch of their student sports clubs ? aquatics, weightlifting, squash, rowing, and even the Mountain & Ski Club of South Africa, which was pretty cool. Then I got into coaching basketball. I coached the UCT Men's Second Team for a season, and then the Ladies' Second Team for two seasons. After that, I was lucky enough to be the assistant coach to Phil Coki for the Men's First Team. It was an incredible experience. I also got involved in squash, becoming a warm-up coach for some of the Super League players and an ASSU representative player.
"Well, I think I'm a pretty driven person. I mean, when I was in South Africa, I was juggling studies, working at UCT, and being super involved in sports. It was a lot to manage, but I really wanted to make the most of my time there. I'm definitely passionate about sports. It's always been a big part of my life, and I loved being involved in so many different things, from playing to managing and coaching. I guess you could say I like to take on leadership roles. I enjoyed being a manager for the sports clubs and coaching the basketball teams. It was great to be able to help other athletes develop and be part of a team. It wasn?t always easy, but it was rewarding. Looking back, I think I adapted pretty well to being in a new country. The Afrikaans language was a challenge at first, but I got through it. I think that shows I?m pretty resilient and willing to learn. I definitely had a lot of fun. I?m an enthusiastic person, and I really enjoyed my time in South Africa. It was definitely exciting, relaxing at times, enjoyable, and packed with memories. I was also challenged, but I think those challenges helped me grow a lot. It was a very educational time for me. I also really value community. Being part of the UCT sports scene was a big deal for me. I liked being part of something bigger than myself and contributing to the development of young athletes. I think I try to have a balanced life, too. I don't just focus on one thing. I like to be involved in different areas and keep things interesting. So, yeah, I'd say I'm driven, passionate about sports, enjoy leading and helping others, adaptable, enthusiastic, and I value being part of a community. That?s me, in a nutshell.
"Okay, so thinking about things I probably wouldn't enjoy? I think I'd get really frustrated with a lack of structure. I mean, when I was managing the sports clubs and now with setting up this fitness program, having a plan and things being organized is really important to me. So, if things are chaotic or constantly changing without any clear direction, that would drive me crazy. I also don't like being bored. If things are too easy or repetitive, I just lose interest. I like a challenge, something that pushes me to learn and grow. Like learning Afrikaans, that was tough, but I?m glad I did it. I need that kind of stimulation. Being isolated or not feeling part of a team would be tough too. I really value that sense of community, like I had with the sports teams at UCT. If I'm not connecting with people or feel like I'm not contributing to something bigger, I wouldn't be happy. And definitely not seeing any progress. I'm all about continuous improvement, whether it's my own development or helping others improve. So, if there's no opportunity to learn new skills or see any tangible results from my efforts, that would be really demotivating. I also hate wasting time. I was always juggling so many things, so being efficient is really important to me. If things are poorly planned or executed, and it feels like my time is being wasted, that would really bother me. And finally, I don't really connect with superficial stuff. I prefer deeper conversations and meaningful contributions. If things are just surface-level, it just doesn't do it for me. I need to feel like there?s substance to what I?m doing. So, yeah, those are probably the kinds of things I wouldn't enjoy."
