My expat journey

Curepipe, Plaines Wilhems, Mauritius
Mauritius is my native country, where I was born on the 15th December 1980. I have been born and brought up in Curepipe until I got married and left the country in February 2005 for Madagascar with my husband who was already an expatriate there.
I completed all my primary and secondary education in Lycee la Bourdonnais from September 1985 until June 2000 and I obtained my Baccalaureate certificate in July 2000 in Accounts and Management.
After I finished secondary school, I followed a 2-year full-time professional course at the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry, after which I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Management Assistance for SME and SMI.
I didn't continue my academic journey in university and immediately started looking for some jobs. I followed many extracurricular pieces of training and temporarily worked in Mauritius, first as an HR Assistant cum Secretary for a couple of months from September to November 2003, after which I resigned due to conflictual relationships with my boss, and then one full year completed as a Clerk in the Life Insurance Department of SICOM Ltd from December 2003 to December 2004.
In September 2009, my husband and I came back to Mauritius because of the socio-political crisis of Madagascar. I remained unemployed since I came back from Mauritius, even though I tried an opportunity as a freelance distributor in a network marketing organisation, which in the end didn't work properly.
After many difficult moments of readaptation as a citizen, we managed to have our new house and to have our own child, and we have been living in Mauritius until my husband got a new opportunity in Seychelles in May 2013.
Since December 2021, after 8 years spent overseas, we are back in Mauritius where my husband is actively looking for a job and where our son is completing his studies at St Nicholas Grammar School. I am also looking for a job and focusing on an online platform individual business project I am trying to create and develop.
The beaches, the local food, my hometown, the diversity of cultures and religions, the richness of our traditions and mother nature
Stray dogs being abandoned on the street, pollution in some areas of the country and the waste management

Doha, Balad墨yat ad Daw岣゛h, Qatar
Our lives in Doha would have been wonderful if my husband didn't suffer so much in his job. My husband has been a victim of many snakes who put a mess in the professional relationship between my husband and his boss, which made that his boss couldn't bear him anymore and did everything to denigrate my husband and progressively removing responsibilities from him. Things arrived at such a point that we couldn't really enjoy having a good life in Doha. Apart going for some shopping in a nearby shopping mall and once going into a Gold Souq, we mostly stayed at home or roamed in the residential area we were living in, because my husband kept on working a lot, including on Saturdays, I had to look after our son for his education, with my husband's help for some subjects like reading, comprehension and maths. It was a traumatizing experience for us, especially for my husband, but I still keep the hope to come back to Doha, because despite all the struggles we have been facing, we could really have been happy there. Unfortunately, fate was stronger than faith and we lost everything :(
I was a full-time housewife and mother once more. I was very busy settling our little birdnest with our cargo kinds of stuff, the cleaning, the cooking and nursing our son. But I was too stressed when I was witnessing my husband suffering so much during his probation period and this affected me a lot emotionally and psychologically, despite all my sacrifices and devotion for our family in the household :(
Though we had a hard time in Doha, I enjoyed the Barwa City area where we were living, including the Lulu Hypermarket, the swimming pool and the residential area in general. I also enjoyed the Gold Souq, the Villagio Mall and one Thai restaurant near the Gold Souq which was amazing.
The lifestyle we had there was because of my husband's struggles during his probation period.

Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
It was one of the best life experiences I have been living and where I really felt at home! I always cherished beauty within diversity, as a mixed girl coming from a mixed and multicultural island, and I never felt like a stranger there. I had the opportunity to become completely independent and standing on my own feet, since everything was settled for me and at my disposal.
I was a full-time housewife and mother again. But during my son's school years, since I discovered that he was suffering from mild autism, I got the opportunity to participate in parents' pieces of training with his inclusion teacher and to discover some new opportunities to learn some skills which would help me as a parent, and which I am planning to study soon, including Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT), Special Education Needs, Learning Coach, Repetitor and Assistant Teacher.
I loved so many things there, especially in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, including:
- the shopping malls (Yas Mall, Dalma Mall, Marina Mall, Dubai Marina Mall, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates)
- Burj Khalifa, including the Fountains
- Some hotels, especially Radisson Blu Yas Island, Ritz Carlton and Atlantis the Palm Dubai
- Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
- Yas Waterworld
- Legoland
- Dubai Miracle Garden
- Global Village
- Desert Safari
And many many more things
The way that many poor workers were mistreated and badly fed and paid. I especially think about my Sri Lankan friends who were living there. My husband and I agreed to help them and give them the maximum support and friendship we could to relieve them a bit from their hardships.

Mahe Island, Seychelles
Unfortunately, it was not a good experience for me. We changed accommodation three times for the same reasons:
- Traffic jams from home to school or office
- My son who was falling sick very often with high fever and vomiting
- Bad landlords who taxed us for each and every little insignificant detail in their house when they were doing inspections with us.
- Too much oppression from my in-laws, who were frequent visitors at our place, though in another hand they brought us a huge amount of help to settle in Seychelles and for transport issues.
I didn't work at all, and was a full time housewife, without friends, all alone, without social life, dealing with the house chores, staying at home and my son's education and dealing with complete loneliness. The only outings we had were to go to the beach, to supermarket and to a kids carousel.
Same as mentioned previously.
Despite my bad experience in Seychelles, I admit I enjoyed the beautiful beaches and the short lifestyle I had in Eden Island, where I had to opportunity to socialize a bit with foreigners, especially an adorable little German baby girl who became our little mascot :)
My life there in general. I don't want to experiment with lifestyle in Seychelles anymore. It brought me nothing but bad memories.

Antananarivo, Analamanga, Madagascar
I have moved to Madagascar after my marriage, and my husband was already an ex-pat living in Madagascar and working as an Administrative and Finance Manager for a Mauritian printing and packaging company that had some branches implanted in Antananarivo and Majunga (North of Madagascar).
- October 2005 - April 2008: Full-time Logistic Assistant liaising with the Deputy General Manager - FTL Madagascar SA - Antananarivo, Madagascar
- July 2008 - December 2008: Part-time Transit and Administrative Agent in replacement of a colleague who went on Maternity Leave - FTL Madagascar SA, Antananarivo, Madagascar
- January 2009 - September 2009: Freelance Personal Assistant - Pluri Services Ocean Indien SARL, Antananarivo, Madagascar
- Social life with many Mauritian and overseas friends
- Restaurants (Kudeta, La Rotonde, Chez Sucett's, Chez Arnaud, O Poivre Vert, Villa Vanille, etc.)
- Cheapness of food
- Wildlife
- A couple of nightclubs, including Six and le Bus
- Pollution
- Poverty mingling with richness
- Corruption
- Lack of hygiene
