I was a university teacher for several years until I retired in 2009

I read a quote from "All Gone to Look for America" by Peter Millar which I think says a lot about Istanbul also...
"the sheer, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, colossal, cluttered, sky-clogging, perpetually self-reinventing vibrant immensity of the place."
The public transit system is excellent but avoid buses because they have to travel on roads clogged by cars.
The traffic is mind-boggling and finding a parking space is worse.
