Hi. I am Mary, a new expat in Tenerife. When I retired last year, I found myself unexpectedly (and, at the time, unwillingly) single. I eventually began to relish being free and decided to make an adventure out of the rest of my life. I am from northern England originally, but was living in Somerset before I left England. I was a provincial journalist/sub editor/editor for many years and love writing still. I also love keeping my few remaining braincells busy and out of mischief by playing backgammon, poker and scrabble. I love pitting my wits, such as they are, against others - or maybe I am just downright competitive, but who cares? Speaking of wit, I have a strong sense of the ridiculous, endless optimism and an ever open mind. So far, in just two months in Tenerife, I have both despaired and laughed hysterically over the Spanish love affair with paperwork, tried to learn some of the language - asked for a straw for my drink and ended up with an alchoholic coffee (yes, honestly), laughed about that too - and met some marvellous people. I feel very brave coming out here as a woman on my own, not knowing a soul, the language or the area very well - but so far it has amazing.
