I grew up in Saudi Arabia during the 1980s, a time that feels both distant and deeply etched in my memory. My family had moved to Jeddah from Bangladesh when I was still quite young. My father worked in hospital administration, and my mother managed our home and helped other Bengali families who were finding their footing in a foreign land. Life in Saudi was simple but strict. The streets were wide and dusty, the buildings tall and beige, and the sky always seemed sharp under the blazing sun. Our apartment was in a quiet neighborhood filled with other South Asian families鈥擯akistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis. We all spoke different dialects at home but shared a common feeling of being 鈥済uests鈥 in someone else鈥檚 country. I went to a Bangladeshi community school, one of the few places where I felt truly at ease. Lessons were a mix of Bengali, English, and Arabic. The teachers were stern鈥攎any carried long plastic rulers that they didn鈥檛 hesitate to use鈥攂ut they also cared about us. What I remember most is the smell of homemade snacks at tiffin break: shingaras wrapped in foil, parathas stuffed with leftover curry, and the occasional sweet treat from someone鈥檚 birthday. Outside of school, my world revolved around simple joys. Thursday and Friday were our weekends back then. On Thursday evenings, my father would take us to the Jeddah Corniche. The Red Sea breeze offered relief from the heat, and I would stare at the King Fahd Fountain as it shot water high into the sky. Families from all over the world gathered there, sitting on mats with flasks of tea and boxes of biryani or samosas. Fridays were for faith and family. After Jummah prayer, we鈥檇 come home to a hearty Bengali lunch鈥攗sually beef curry

This was when the world was more peaceful. A sense of security and no problems . We went to the Corniche beach and visited restaurants.
The weather was really hot and no independence
