My expat journey

new-zealandthailandthailandthailand
Chanthaburi, Thailand

Since 2011

Chanthaburi, Thailand

Settled in a small town (pop. 7500) about 15km from Chan city with partner and daughter, moved here due to partner's employment, no regrets, great place for us
HR manager
I love it; small town life but not too isolated, easy access to beach/coastline, some of the best road cycling areas in the country, and an easy 3hrs (bus) to Suvarnabhumi when travel is required
Sometimes I'd like to see a movie at cinema in English, or buy an English book to read . . . no chance!

Khao Chakan, Sa Kaeo province, Thailand

Apr 2010 - Mar 2011

Khao Chakan, Sa Kaeo province, Thailand

Live/work on a crop farm - cassava, sugar, eucalyptus. Home renovation/repair. Volunteer coaching volleyball, water safety
A new experience, full-immersion! 24km from Khao Chakan, village life! 46km to Sa Kaeo city the nearest cafe or supermarket. No regrets, a valuable year of my life.
At times the isolation and very limited internet/communications got me down. I had a time of poor health and limited medical care.

Ban Chalong, Phuket, Thailand

May 2009 - Apr 2010

Ban Chalong, Phuket, Thailand

Learn Thai language, sports training for ocean swim events, surf lifesaving. Helped coach sport each Saturday for orphanage
Volunteer, English teacher and sport and fitness coaching
Weather, easy access to beaches, made some long lasting friendships here
Anything bar related, sex tourism and sex tourists. Drunks at any time of day. Dangerous for cycling. Foreigners trying to scam me; locals too. Being robbed/burgled. Looking back, i stayed six months too long.
