My husband and I carried out one of our big projects: moving to NZ. We took the plunge in November 2011, before our 2 children were too old to leave their friends and their studies! I am fortunate to be able to practice my exciting job as a speech therapist in Auckland with the region's large French-speaking community and I also work remotely with other French-speakers in NZ and around the world. My husband found an interesting position in a large local company barely 15 days after our arrival and we were able to buy a house very close to the school. Our children follow a bilingual schooling which suits them perfectly and they are now bilingual. Our integration happened gradually, the French-speaking community is so large that I speak French more often than English! It is easier to get to know compatriots with whom we share the experience of expatriation, than with local people whose lifestyle habits may differ radically, especially at the beginning. But little by little, the bird makes its nest. We have absolutely no regrets about our choice, other than the sadness of being far from family and friends who remained in France. Life here has advantages and disadvantages, like everywhere, but overall, as far as we are concerned, the advantages are preponderant... for now, who knows!
