Expats community

Danny65

Hello,鈥↖鈥檝e never been to Botswana, but now as a retiree, I鈥檓 interested in spending some time there in the near future to explore and discover new things. I鈥檓 currently trying to find information about the expat community, if it exists. I鈥檓 primarily looking to stay in Gaborone, but I鈥檇 also be open to exploring smaller towns or cities depending on what I find.

I鈥檝e watched numerous videos about Botswana, but very few are made by expats living there, and none seem to focus on the expat community itself. Does such a community exist? If so, where are most expats from鈥攁re they mainly from other African countries, Afrikaans-speaking regions, African Americans, Brits, Europeans, or Asian countries? Are they a significant group, and do they have opportunities to connect, like organizing events or social gatherings?

I鈥檇 really appreciate any insights or resources you can share. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Danny65

Welcome to 大咖福利影院 馃榾

I am curious,聽 what drew you to Botswana as a retirement destination, given that you have not visited yet and have limited information? It can be challenging to start a life there without knowing things like the health system, the best areas to live, and the local expat community.

You might consider a short visit first to see if you can adapt and if it meets your needs before making a longer-term move.

Cheers,

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl thanks for the welcoming!

Although I鈥檝e never been to Botswana, I鈥檓 drawn to it for several reasons based on what I鈥檝e learned through reading and listening to others. Having visited South Africa, where I didn鈥檛 personally witness crime, I did notice several signs of the alleged high crime rate, which made me more aware of safety concerns. Botswana, on the other hand, seems to offer a much safer environment. It also has a tax-friendly system and, at least for now, doesn't seem to follow the WEF agenda. The friendly nature of the local people is another factor that stands out. But of course, these are just secondhand impressions, so I plan to visit and get a true feel for the place myself. As for the recent loss of visa free access to the UK for Botswana passport holders followed by some loss of popularity as a country among the West, while some may view it as a negative, I see it as a positive. It鈥檚 a sign that Botswana is focused on its own path, rather than following the policies of certain Western countries. In terms of the health system, I鈥檓 fairly confident that the A&E in Botswana is up to scratch. However, when it comes to using allopathic medicine to treat chronic conditions, I鈥檇 consider that my last resort, as it tends to have a low success rate in many cases
