overcoming their sense of inferiority by demanding that they be called by their professional title instead of their actual names?

They do it when introducing themselves "Hi, my name is DOCTROR mohammed" or even "Engineer such and such" and yes, it really happens like that.. aaall the time.

I couldn't believe my ears the first time, I thought the guy was joking and laughed (embarrassing everyone), but then it happened again with someone else, and again, and again....

It ain't just Libya. My sis-in-law is "Barrister" and another one at NNPC is "Engineer". NNPC couldn't engineer how to run a bath, but wtf....

In certain areas on the world, titles carry a lot of status, I personally don't have a problem with it unless the individual makes you address them with their full title and it happens to be 'professor of yada yada yada yada, gained at the university of .......'

. Get used to Libya my friend, accept the bits that annoy you, and embrace the good bits(their are many) and you will enjoy it a lot more.

What's the point? to me this says: "hey, look at me, I desperately aspire to be someone of significance and my less than mediocre intelligence prevents me from realizing that most people don't give a dead rat's $hit how important I think I am. From reading your recent posts I would say it is you yourself that has the "hey, look at me, I desperately aspire to be someone of significance etc. etc." attitude.

I come from the UK where highly professional engineers are equated with car mechanics by the masses and I find it pretty refreshing to have that professionalism recognised - although I don't try to use it myself.

I have come across this previously in Germany, Italy and Austria, coutries where engineering is valued and admired.

I occasionally get "bey" after my name from my turkish colleagues which I thoroughly enjoy :-)

well, in my opinion, its ok for someone to add "Engineer" Abu while introducing themselves..

But i think its NOT OK that half of the ppl who introduce themselves as Engineers here do not have a recognized certificate to go with it, where some didnt even take an Engineering Course to start with.

It's like meeting an Architect the other day and she only did 2 years in university for the course. I asked her to draw something for me and she said everything is on Google Sketch. She needs internet.

MoEl has got an issue with Libya I guess. as he is originally Libyan and wants to be treated like an American without any success, he started to search for only the negative things in Libya, although it is his own country and he should try to be more positive towards it.聽 there is a Libyan proverb suits his case : only Dog denies his roots.

However, as an engineer myself, i do not understand putting this up there as if prof, dr of MD.

I think that should be left for academic staff, doctors and lawyers.
