ladies be careful, and between 3pm and 5pm the streets almost empty and quiet. just as risky as night times.
I hope that lady a full soon recovery

Be cautious, good people.
also my Libyan colleague told me that on Gargaresh there are these people who are disgusing there self like the ladies wearing the scarf in the face,, (you know that you can just see there eyes..) but it happens to be a man..so all expat should be very carefulllllll...always be attentive and don't go out alone on the place when your not secure.
Ari, who was recently the lady mugged that you mention, is currently doing well in the UK.This info came in an email to the BC.
I was told that this crime is now the new trend in Tripoli.
Yes, mugging seems to have arrived.

Yip, it was Ari that was attacked not far from my flat. My wife got a call from her and I went (and with the help of some local guys) got her back to my flat, and waited for Tim to come and collect her. The hunt is still on for the perpetrators, and if/when I find them, retribution will be swift and brutal. The trend seems to happen leading up to Ramadan, not sure why, but the same thing happened last year I am told. You might actually know my wife as she is part of the BCWAGS group.
CSI New York would make the connection: the police suspect westerners are involved in the bag snatching scam
CSI Tripoli: Ramadan is coming, both sides of the law need to boost their coffers.
It's like in Kazakhstan, the police get active on a Friday afternoon to get enough money for their weekend vodka.

That's what I was told was the root cause Mudman, still can't figure it out though, why they need extra cash for Ramadan, is it all those late night parties they attend ?
(it probably is).
They're fleecing us. Don't let anyone pull the wool over your eyes.
It's ram raiding by another name, don't ewe know聽 ?
etc.

Ah, so the Scots really are as dumb as they sound.
Did you bother to ask anyone what happens during and just after Ramadan?
There's a fair amount of gift giving that goes on during Eid.聽
All the stuff that happens here is just like the smash and grab in Scotland just before Christmas.聽

Away back to sinking Frigates
Yeah I gathered the gift thing alright. I am willing to give the culprits a good gift as well if/when I find them, they will be really pleased because it is a gift that they will see every day for the rest of their lives when they look in a mirror
My sympathy to the victims, things happen and I have 4 advices for that:
1- Don't be in crowded areas like backstreets public markets.
2- Don't go in abandoned streets.
3- If you felt something's not right go with your feeling and do聽 what's necessary but try to avoid it not to make a scene.
4- try not to make that you have money, by dressing expensive clothes or taking a big amount of green the purse, things like that .
I would like to tell that in Tripoli I haven't seen a single accident of these muggings for years but I would like to say also mugging is in every country around the globe and for me Tripoli still has a reasonable rate of that kinda accidents.

Moderated, really? It was clearly a joke.
Mudman wrote:Sandman's on the naughty step!
Worse than that, he has been banished to a really bad place, which has clean beaches, cinemas, bars, good restaurants, clubs and wait a minute, Sandman how can I get the same ban as you again ?

i am new to this forum thing and just wanted to say hi to y'all. And btw muggings and robberies got nothing to do it with ramadan. shit happens everywhere it is still safer than new york.

These guys are Libyan, and as Mudman says we are living in Libya, not New York or Europe. They are also mainly picking on women, true cowards.

And next he'll be telling us that Libyans aren't even Africans

Get a grip my friend, you can't blame foreign workers for our society's ills. This is a trend that needs to be nipped in the bud.
I for one, will try to inform people I know of this most dispicable, cowardly trend.
And don't get me started on the ill treatment of Sub-Saharan Immigrants by a large percentage of the Libyan population. But that is another story.
Rocko wrote:maybe they need cash for ramadhan coz no one works during ramadhan...(??) Just a wild yet somewhat logical guess..
If they don't work during Ramadan then they don't work at all. My lot are still working (cough cough) during Ramadan, albeit on shorter hours.
the crime everywhere in the world , and our community not an exception
about the Filipinoz..one filipino died in multiple stub in聽 Dahra!...Yes true ,, and the killer was another filipino man ,
killed him because of jealousy and money ,they were lovers ,gays
we saw that on Libyan channel ( Al Jamahyria channel ) in Al Amn Wa Almojtama show
they were 2 gays working in Tripoli ,

our police not that corrupted yet ,
they stop cars for check safety and documents of the car , to make sure it belong to driver or not
because as you know , the biggest crime in the world is car stole
I have stopped thousand of times at night in tripoli , never been asked for money , just check documents
and i bet they never asked you for money ,
ibrahjette wrote:and i bet they never asked you for money ,
I'm sorry my friend, not quite true. I'm trying to type while restraining my laughter.
I have been stopped several times and the only thing said to me in English was "fifty", then "thirty", like we're haggling over a bribe. Now he knows the words "f*ck all" as that are what I gave him.
I know of many and this isn't 1 or 2, it's more like 10-20 expats who have been stopped more than once and despite having all the correct papers and licences have been asked for money, had their cars or papers confiscated or been forced to go to a police station.
I would never go as far to say all of them are corrupt, just the ones that ask us for money.
ibrahjette wrote:they stop cars for check safety
Ok, this is a wind up isn't it ? You're a funny guy.聽 Nice one.

I believe this statement is incorrect
why you don't report them to local police station ? they have no right to ask for money
and why you gave them ?
i can't believe it ,

I didn't, I refused. We had a stand off for 15 mins before he got bored first. On other occasions, I, like most expats, pick up our phones and call someone we know with the right "connections" who then has a brief conversation with the nice policeman. They usually give us our documents back PDQ.
But I quite like the idea of spending my evening in a local police station, telling them that one of their colleagues has been asking for money. I can imagine the fun we'll all have!

i don't say we don't have crime here , we have

i like to tell u friends that our goverment care so much about u exapts, so if any one of these expats reports the police about these things, and to say that they r not comfort they will do an action, hope so.
sorry is not enough but i have to say it 4 u friends.
Libyans r good and friendly people don't worry! yup
We do feel sorry that these sort of crime arrived yet.聽 but having lived in the west for good long time, Libya is in no comparison to the sort of crime that happens there.聽 and I hope it stays that way!
