Anyway, it was a beautiful house, with a perfect garden and two lemon trees and one orange tree. I loved the sunshine, the jasmine, the honeysuckle... the stray cats who dropped by every now and then.
I loved the huge corridors that did not make much sense to our family's organization of domestic space, I loved the sunlit kitchen, the view of the garden from my desk... I loved the way my husband had clumsily furnished the place before we arrived. I loved the way I had re-arranged the furniture.
Now it is all gone... I know expats are kind'a people who have the ability to detach themselves from a location. And I know natives of Libya are going through much serious hardships right now. I know I am being silly, but I miss my lemon trees and this blog is the only place where there may be a one or two people who can relate to this sentiment.
I guess most of the expats moved on, so did we, I guess. It is just that this image of my sunlit garden keeps haunting me... and the idea that it will never be ...
I hope one of the regulars read this note and drops a note saying, yea we miss our corner of tripoli as well. That's all I need.

It's been nice to see ur posts again after I finally decided to leave Libya and get out.
I am totally sure and very optimistic that things will get much better in Libya in the near future, and I hope to see you all back in Libya helping Libyans in rebuilding and shifting it to become a better civilized country and society.
Still little by little we build our new life at home country, looking forward to new expat adventures in future.
Cheers and good luck to all,
and a big hello to europeans
don't be too sentimental missing the people, the TV says you'll have them around in the nearest future

Just to add my feelings to the mix - I lived in Tripoli for 16 months, before being evacuated by the South African government on 27 Feb.聽 I still feel such intense pain at what I left behind, because even in that short time, Libya became my home. Not so much the things (I had to leave 99% of my stuff behind in my flat - was only allowed to take 1 pc of hand luggage @10kg with me), but the many local friends I have there, who are now in the middle of the fighting.聽 I miss them soooo much it is a physical pain in my heart.聽 Even though I still call a few of them about once a week, we cannot have a real conversation, because of the danger.聽 And even though we keep reassuring each other of our love and concern, and that we will soon see each other again - we all know that is a dream we all cling to, because the alternative is too terrible to contemplate.聽 Then I look at the photographs taken during my time there - and I long for them all over again.聽 When i see pics of Tripoli, I remember being able to walk freely through the streets at night - something I cant do in my own country.聽 I remember having coffe with a friend at Cafe casa - or dinner at Al Attar.聽 And it pains me sooo much that that lifestyle is gone - maybe forever.聽 I long to go back - even though i know it is not safe right now - but the longing wont go away.
Sorry - i'm rambling.聽 But thank you for starting this forum - it helps to see that others feel as i do, and that i am not alone!!!
God Bless you all.
Jenni
