Public transportation in Mauritius : is it reliable ?

yaelsebagys

Hello, I have a question regarding public transportation. I will live in Pereybere and my next job may be in Grand baie or Ebene. I am expecting both contacts in my inbox tomorrow for my review. Transportation will NOT be my criteria to choose between the two. I just want to know if I can rely on it and what to expect. If I take the one in Ébène, can I rely on public transportation to commute Monday to Friday from Pereybere to Ébène? On Mauritius Bus route, it reads that the commute will take 99min or 80min net. What does 80min net mean? What sounds more realistic to you 1h40 or 1h20 to go from Pereybere to Ébène? I will not live anywhere else than Pereybere. All my people I care about are in Pereybere. I don’t have my driving license so that’s not  an option. Thanks for the help guys !

Hello Yaelsebagys,

Welcome on board !

From Pereybère to Ebene by bus, in peak hours can be problematic, specially if you are going to work.

I wouldn't rely on public transport at all if I lived in Pereybère and had to work at Ebene due to traffic, possible breakdown, accidents that slow down traffic, bus schedule. If you miss a bus you'll have to wait a lot for the next one.

Hope other members can provide their insights as well.

Public transportation can be stressful here. I don't know where you come from but I can tell you it is more of one hour travel, with the metro which we have now in Port Louis which can take you to Ébène in about half an hour (but frankly I don't know because I have never done it) and also you must keep in mind that the Ébène station is still under construction. There's no metro that goes there directly, you will have to take another one in Rose Hill to go there.

And from Pereybere to Port Louis you will have to go by bus. And often they are old and ratty if you see what I mean. For tourism, it ok but to use everyday it can be stressful.

I am Mauritian and have lived in Pereybere some twenty years ago. At that time we had a car but sometimes I took the buses to go to my work in Beau Bassin (not too far from Ébène). At that time there was no metro. I can tell you it was a stressful life. Spending so much time on the roads, it was not the life you expected to live by choosing Perebere for it's beautiful beach and slow living life

If you have a choice between two works and if your life will be in Pereybere, why not choose the one which is in Grand Baie. I suppose if you are coming to live here it is because you want to change your living style and not to spend hours on the road, even if you have a car.

Even if nowadays the roads are good and one has not to pass through Port Louis to go where one wants because there is many roads and highways to travel around the island, it is still very hectic to travel by public transportation.

I hope that I have help you.
