Unexpectedly High CEB Bill: How to Address and Resolve the Issue

leandrobernal2000

Hello Friends,

The Central Electricity Board (CEB) contacted me last week because they noticed a significant increase in my electricity consumption over the past month. When I inquired about the specifics, they informed me that I used 2,917 units in October. I was shocked by this news, as my usual consumption is typically between 280 to 300 units per month, even with regular use of air conditioning, the kitchen, shower, and refrigerator. I don't understand how my usage could increase tenfold from one month to the next.

Moreover, in November, my consumption returned to normal levels, at 273 units. CEB insists that these units were indeed used and must be billed, but I am at a loss as to how I can challenge this or request a review if CEB is unwilling to do so on their own. The bill could amount to as much as 31,000 Rupees, which is beyond my means.

I would be immensely grateful for any help or guidance you can provide. Thank you so much.

Hello,

You need to make a complaint at the CET itself. Do you have the bill ? Is the electricity bill in your name?

In which region are you located ?

Hello, by any chance do you rent any parts of the house  ? Do you have any electrical sockets outside ? I have seen cases where Airbnb owners get huge bills due to the tenants running crypto mining equipment, or leaving the ACs running 24/7. As for external sockets, if not monitored, they are prone to abuse.

I would recommend that you have the CEB meter checked. I would recommend also that you get in touch with your neighbours in order to ensure that you are not the only one being affected. If that is the case, you can remit your grievances to the CEO of the CEB to make them aware that the situation is clearly investigated. You may seek legal advice as well. You have all the facts and you should not penalised as you are not the one who is at fault

Hi

Mru resident here. About 5 years ago my relative had a similar experience with an astronomical bill and as a one off. I would suggest the following. Take and record your daily meter reading. Tge chance of this recurring is not zero but you can be hit by lightning twice..

On another note it may be useful to ask the ceb to check the external supply to your house that no one is tapping your supply.

Thirdly go on the local radio 1,explik ou cas, to take up your case. Usually in creole but I can't see no reason in english. It's like a citizen advice bureau and very good at resolving cases.

Lastly there has been a lot of similar cases enough to smell something fishy......
