Learning French in Mauritius
katiecutehair wrote:Thanks for the information about Benedicte!
Hi Kate,
First of all I would like to know are you a beginer? I also want to study in a group but I need to start from zero I know nothing in French
Alta wrote:Hi there my friend count me in. Alta
Hi Alta,
You want to start learning French? I thought you want to start from Creole. Can I count on you while talking with the tutors. I know Musheer also wants to lern in group so we can gather a small group
I am not a beginner, I took some French in high school and university.聽 I could probably have a conversation with a small child, but definately need some help.聽 However, perhaps we could still do group type session.聽 I certainly wouldn't mind reviewing.聽 There's lots of stuff that I have forgotten and would like to refresh.
aussiedodo wrote:As indicated above, Benedicte will tutor you at Rs200 per lesson, one on one.聽 She is a French graduate having studied in Toulouse. I can recommend her. Her home phone number is 675 0204 and the mobile number is 732 5633. I'm sure she'd be open to tutoring a small group as well. She did so well tutoring my daughter that she is now studying advanced French at universtiy. She started as a beginner....
Hi Jenni,
Thank you very much for the information regarding Benedicte. Curepipe is a little far from us but I can change 2 buses so I hope I can somehow make it once or twice a week.
Thank you very much again,it is very kind of you,
Natalya

Great, so lets see if others are joining so we will know how many people we gather in order to discuss the price with the tutors.
I will keep you posted.
terence wrote:Do you guys think it will be a good idea if we have one post on this forum where聽 experts can translate some common words and sentences from English to French. It could help a bit for non French speaking expats.
Maarion said we can read and post on the french forum they can correct our mistakes
looks like things are moving!! thanx Aussiedodo ( cool nick name btw:P) for kicking us off on t right path. I will be meeting Cristina tomrw, and can give more information by evening. This could help us to fix up on a tutor by end of the week (hopefully). I wonder what happened to the guys Jaden, from Quatre bones who were also keen on learining,? maybe now we could have this on weekends, and most ppl could come for it as well.

We are still very interested in learning French and can do any evening.聽 We have transport and so can travel, although the closer to Quatre Bornes the better - Curepipe is obviously fine and even Flic en Flac is no problem.
We are all beginners, I know maybe 20 words that I remember from my school French many years ago, the others can say hello and thank you

Let us know what progress you make!
J.

i thought for a while you were doing the Houdini on us

Jaden - 5 people plus me, Alta, Musheer and Katie.
So Musheer when you meet Christina tell her that it is 9 of us and try to get better price. Please also don`t forget to mention about books whether we have to buy them or she will provide us with all materials. It may be important fact while making final decision.
I will talk tomorrow with Beneticte as she has good recomendations and she lives in Curpipe which is comfortable for all of us. I will also ask Vayid and one more person. If the tutors have same conditions we can if needed meet each of them in order to take right decition. This person is going to teach us so we should like him/her it is very important fact when choosing a teacher

I spoke to Cristina, she stays near the black river, and can do the classes for 250 per person per class, totally 20 classes if we are in a group n go to her place. But, she can do classes聽 exclusively on weekdays.. No weekends at all

but she has no problem teaching early in t mornings.. So i guess we now need to take a call. One important issue is wat timings are ppl comfortable with ??
musheer wrote:also, what days... i.e , weekdays or weekends, following that we can decide on the tutor
I can do on weekdays but Alta for instance can`t make it and early mornings is not solution as well - we will be sleepy and it won`t be productive.
I am calling Benedicte she is not answering - I wrote a message so Iam waiting for a reply from her, from vayid and one more guy. We will see...
Any preference on when you would like it?
I have found one teacher that is willing to do either private classes in Roche Brunes but can also travel to other areas if needed.
This is around 200 Rupees per hour and she has just come back from Australia where she was doing translations from english to French and vice versa. she has a masters degree in English and french.
Classes can be on any day after 2pm or even weekends. Let me know if you are interested then I can put you in contact

We all look forward to our first lesson.

I'm not in Mauritius yet but I happen to be a teacher - I teach English and French. I LOVE private tutoring so I'd like to know whether I'd be allowed to teach individuals aside from my job when I'm in Mauritius? Would I risk being thrown out because of working permit issues or something?
Thanks in advance!

If you look at:
Eligibility to apply for a Work Permit
i An employer based in Mauritius should apply for a work permit in
respect of an expatriate who will be employed to do a specific job for
the employer on a full time basis.聽 The work permit is non-transferable.
So one work permit for the position you have been accepted for.

Lol the stupid thing is that I have driven to Curepipe several times before (basically the opposite way to how we came back) and so know exactly how to get there - I just had a brain failure on Sunday and got my towns mixed up!聽 And then once you are off the main roads, the almost total lack of signs make it very hard to find your way back.
Ah well, all ended ok in the end.聽 Although I am seriously thinking about Sat Nav

Louis.. Thanks for the offer, but it looks like we guys are going to go for Benedicta after having met her on Sunday

But it was nice of you to let us know

I'd be happy to exchange French lessons against Hindi, music or photography lessons, if people are still looking for French lessons in September!
Sorry my English is very bad but I'm try !
Why not take advantage of bi-lingual forum for dialogue in another language?
Welcome to the French forum! this may be a good start
What are your current levels in French and what is your purpose?
To discuss in courant language or learn the writing?
Get a degree in languages?
Learn French literature?
We can start the dialogue between us?
For a real French Language Training "Alliance fran莽aise" is an institute I think the best position and has several antenna in the island
