Is there any way to bring back cars from abroad?

Jey_L

Hello guys,

I'm a Mauritius living abroad and is coming back to live in the country for good with family next month. We own 2 cars (Toyota Corolla 1995 1.6cc & Honda Amaze 2013 1.2cc) and would like to bring them with us. What would be the customs clearance etc?

Thanks in advance :)

Cheers!

Hi,

According to :
* The car should be between 18 months and 48 months old
* You'll need to get a fair chunk of paperwork sorted out
* You may need to pay import duty

You should probably read up on vehicle import duties - since the duty can be up to 100% it's fairly important.  If you fall under the category of returning resident (it sounds like you might), then you may be able to buy or import 1 car and not pay most of the duty on it.

Details here:

Things to keep in mind when importing a car as a returning resident:
* You need to buy or import a car within 6 month of returning to qualify for the duty exemption
* You're limited to one car per married couple
* You can only apply for this once in your life
* If you are importing a car, make sure you can find parts for it Mauritius - not all cars exist here
* If you sell the car within 4 years you'll have to pay for some/all of the duty
* You can also buy a car here and get the discount on the duty

Good luck on your return to Mauritius!

Cheers,

Dan.
