Thanks for taking time and effort to post these details!

Up north in Pointe Aux Cannonier, there is Dr Bourdet. He's qualified UK (Reading University). Many says he has a 'bit of a character' but, in my own experience, I like this guy. He's just straight-forward and frank that's all... so take no offense. He's very trained with Horses. He is on 'top scale' of payment but does a good job with cats and Dogs and has x-ray machine. Does not work Sunday and have strict opening hours, so much ring and confirm first.

When my dog got sick i asked around and many told me he saved their animals life. So did he for my dog who is now happily running around again.

Stormtrooper, I was reading through the posts on animals and noticed your difficulty with giving pills to cats. There is a tool we just called a pill popper that is like a straw inside a straw with a piece of rubber tube on one end. The rubber tube is split at the end so it will hold a small pill. You quickly place the pill in the back of the cats mouth and "pop" the other end which pushes the inside "straw" against the pill and shoots it behind the cat's tongue. It's not a homemade item but is sturdy plastic, very simple but well made. A vet should be able to order one for you. They should be cheap but nothing seems to be anymore. It works well for puppies or any small animal since it's much thinner than our fingers.

This is such a helpful thread!! We're bringing our cat over in August but while we were in Mauritius last week for paper work and stuff, we also checked out the quarantine situation (a bit scary) and what sort of cat food I could find in the supermarkets. I didn't come across any pet stores... do they exist over there?? I'd like to be able to get my hands on litter trays, bowls and Sheba (cat food). Any ideas??
We'll be living near the MSPCA in Calodyne so I suppose that would be our best vet option.

Hi Mishkj

There was a couple of pet shops in the North when we first arrived but they have since closed down.聽 You will find litter trays, bowls and other accessories in the supermarkets and at Espace Maison.聽 The same places have food but I have never seen Sheba.

Hi,

For those living in the east, here's a vet with whom I have had very good experience:

He's definitely a big talker and doesn't have a fancy consultation but he does house calls, vaccinations, implantation of microchips, and most importantly he has sound knowledge of the art.

Would recommend him without hesitation.

Hi AML19, you could try Eric Bestel in Tamarin or Christian Bourdet in Mt Choisy but to be honest I doubt any vets in Mauritius do such surgery.聽 We recently needed surgery for one of our dogs (very different - torn cruciate ligament of rear leg) but what I did find out is that only a very limited variety of surgeries can be performed in Mauritius due to lack of specialised equipment and experience with such surgeries.聽 Also there is no gas anaesthetic available on the island for animals, they must keep topping it up intravenously during surgery.

We live in the North and ended up traveling to Dr Eric Bestel in Tamarin for the diagnosis on our dog after several incorrect diagnosis and treatments.聽 Eric has a very professional practice and is open all day Monday to Friday and mornings on weekends.聽 Once we had our correct diagnosis we were then told no one in Mauritius had the experience or the equipment to do the surgery. We were extremely fortunate to have a vet surgeon friend in Australia who agreed to travel to Mauritius with the equipment to perform the op.

Eric does have a colleague in Reunion who travels to Mauritius once or twice a year to do surgeries.

I do wish you luck in getting the right treatment for your dog and hope it will be easier than our experience with specialist surgery.

I wanted to add to it my personal experiences with vets here.

I go only to Dr Eric Bestel consultation, for I have seen this doctor accomplish miracles on my dogs for more than 13 years.聽 For example, I have assisted 2 desperate surgeries (both cases had septis) made by himself where he saved the life of the animals. He almost fixed one of them using an improvised pipe system to evacuate water from her body.

I have seen a few other vets and I must confess that most of the time it ended in a catastrophic diagnostic and treatment. Here are a few聽 anecdotes:
One of my dog of only 3 years old was diagnosed by one stupid vet to have a cancer in his mouth when he only had an onion stuck in his palate and a sore tongue after having tasted some detergents.

Another vet once had a contraceptive injection on a dog already having puppies inside of her.聽 I'm still furious about this.

Once I had a vet who could not even give a lethal injection to a dying dog.

IMO, Dr Bestel is truly amazing, passionate about animals with a good scientific approach in analysis and a valuable experience.聽 He used to have better equipment at a point in time and to have a consultation in Curepipe.聽 But I really don't care, I will travel as far as Tamarin because I have experienced enough massacre.

If your cockatiel has bubbles in the fluid, or it has gone 'crusty' they may need some antibiotics from a Vet. This is based on my chickens! :-)

i got a tortoise well my parents do we have it for 10 i was abroad for a long time now that im back i want to get it checked聽 by a vet not sure if it is possible or if vets do only cats dogs and聽 other pets like hamster, etc..

can anyone help im in the central part of the island and im looking for a good vet who knows about tortoise turtles etc..

I see you post was from way back in 2011, but wondered if you could tell me if there is/are reputable catteries in Mauritius as we need to leave our cat there for a couple of few weeks.

We are relocating from the States and all is in place except we will only be in Mauritius for a聽 a couple of weeks before coming over long term.聽 The idea was to board her in the UK en route but Mauritian Authorities say NO. She would have to be in the UK 6 months and reapply for an import permit...

Hi I also have a dog who needs Cataract surgery, but there is no one in Mauritius that performs this operation on our pets.

My vet Eric Bestel in Tamarin, has said he knows of a Vet from either South Africa or Reunion (I cannot remember which one) anyway the vet comes here for a day or 2 and performs the ops.

It is very expensive but I thought if a few of us got together, it may work out cheaper.

My dog has one eye fully covered and her other eye is just starting with a cataract.

Let me know if your interested in finding out more details and then I can ask my vet to find out more details.

I just want to share my experience,seeing as how information on facebook and internet can be misleading!week
We were looking for a vet to perform An operation on my friends dog who has been hit by a car and suffers from hip dislocation.
Unfortunately her usual vet is very ill and has been replaced by someone else.On the first day she was send home with just some anti-inflammatory drugs.The next day X-ray showed a dislocation of th hip.Since reduction of the dislocation failed,surgery was suggested but we were told to wait for 10days ,once again she was send home without any real painkiller.
I myself am a medical doctor(human kind) and when I visited my friends I saw she was in excruciating pain.I contacted *** (pool house veterinary clinic in the UK) and she said she couldn't understand this at all.Told me I had to find someone competent to operate at once.(scolded me).So what to do:internet.Found this website of a clinic in Albion that seems state of the art.Made an appointment with Dr *** who was very friendly and could see us the same afternoon.We put the dog very carefully into the car and drove for 2 hours.When we got there:huge disappointmentand not what we expected at all.We did not want the leave the dog in such a rundown and dirty place but wanted to give it some chance .So I had a conversation with the vet who has a degree from Bucharest,but when he described the operation he wanted to perform I could not get out of there fast enough.If it had not killed the dog she most surely would have lost her leg!I am aghast at the difference between the promises of the website and the reality of this place.Maybe it is ok for vaccination or routine stuff(would not know,if no other possibility maybe...)but it is not at all what the place pretends to be on the internet!
So please think twice before going there!
