Looking for advice on exploratory vacation with the family

noirret

Hi all,

I'm considering moving to Mauritius with my family. Before I can decide on this, I wanted to visit for a couple of months (2 or 3), to get a better feeling of what it is to live there. I'm looking to rent a house or apartment for the duration of the stay, preferably on or near the beach. I'm looking to do this trip around December 2020 - February 2021, so it would also allow me to skip the cold months back at home in Bulgaria.

I have 2 kids, who will be respectively 4 and a half y.o. and 7 months old in December. And, yeah, my wife will also be coming along. :)

I'm looking for advice on which area of the island to choose for this adventure. Ideally, it would satisfy all of the conditions below:
- good daycare available nearby
- a healthy expat community to which we could potentially connect
- near the beach
- decent supermarkets, restaurants nearby
- I'll likely be working remotely during the stay, so good internet connection is a must

I haven't decided on a budget yet, but I'm neither super wealthy, nor do I struggle. So something mid-range would be best.

I would greatly appreciate any advice from expats or locals. Thanks guys!

Hello Noirret,

For you to have a great stay and have a very good experience, i would suggest you look for an apartment in the north part of the island, mainly in GrandBaie. You can find some affordable and decent apartments around Rs 12 000 or Rs 15000. I don't know your budget but its worth it. It's a coastal area so the beach is near even the supermarkets ( Super U and La Croisette), daycare, restaurants, Telecom and pubs all nearby. As for the internet connection, i believe you can take the Emtel one, it's around Rs 900 a month. Since you will be working from home you will have a decent connection. Its mostly sunny and hot  even in winter times.
Now, if you want to do shopping, i would advise you go to port Louis. You will get things on a cheaper price.

Let me know if you will need more infos.

Regards,

Hash
