Hi , Any telugu speaking people? I would like to know how many telugu people are there in this country and the frequent meeting point of them in Mauritius. I heard around 16,000. Is it true?

Hello,

It is difficult to say as there has been no census for a long time. Also there is a legal issue going for years regarding the declaration of your "religion" during the population census. However, according to the Telugu Maha Sabha there must be between 25,000 to 50,000 telugus in Mauritius.

Just for understanding, No discriminations, Mauritius is very peaceful country with diversified聽 cultures - Ikkada two types of Telugu people, One is this generation who come from Telugu states for work/business/settlers and others who settled from Ages, which are local Telugu.

Namaskaramandi. Nenu ikkada Telugu bhasha teacher gaa pani chestaanu. Very much involved in Telugu activities organised here. Born as 5th generation of indentured labourers. Around 40 000 to 50 000 ppl are descendants of Telugu immigrants. While many of them follow the ethnic culture, very few can speak in the language. Telugu is taught here as an optional language just like other Indian languages brought by immigrants. These languages are valued in the curriculum and taught for culture preservation purposes as well as to open up to the diaspora. For any other queries u may contact me through mail on***
