Work Permit for a spouse of Mauritian Citizen (2022)

Traveller245

Hi, I was wondering since it was said in last year (June 2021) that spouses of Work/Occupation permit holders will be exempt from having to acquire work/occupation permit

1. Logically this probably applies to spouse of Mauritian citizen as well, right? The thing is I don't find much information about this specifically. Does anyone know where to find more information about it?

2. Did the bill go through and is there any official statement/link to the bill itself that introduced these changes? I find many articles about it but nothing official.

3. I also can't seem to find information about Work permit requirements and process for spouse of Mauritian citizen. (NOT talking about occupation permit). Is there anything I could read to find out more about it? There is a lot of information about Occupation Permit everywhere, but not about Work Permit. If the bill went through then it's probably irrelevant, but I still want to know about it.

Hi Traveller,

Welcome on board  :)

Unfortunately the bill didn't go through, it was not voted. Spouse of expats working here under OP need their own OP/work permit if they wish to work.

Non-citizens, married to Mauritian Nationals prior to the 8th March
2019 will continue to be exempted from the requirements of a permit as
per the Employment (Non-citizens) (Restriction) Exemptions Regulation
1970. (as amended). For other they need a work permit

More info about work permit here :    >> Guidelines

Thank you, I found a lot of information!  :)

One thing I can't understand though is what really is difference between Occupation permit and Work permit (self-employment, graphic design field). I only see the differences in requirements. But as someone going to be married to a Mauritian Citizen - does it make sense to apply for Occupation permit (OP) if you can way more easily obtain Work permit (WP)? Are there any differences with WP as to what fields of work you are able to work in as self-employed, any limitations, etc.? Because for my case, and from what I've read, I see no advantages in applying for OP.

The Occupation Permit doesn't seem relevant for a foreign spouse of Mauritian citizen. The OP = work permit + residence permit. Plus minimum salary requirements - Rs 30,000 (BPO, Pharma manufacturing, food processing,IT) and Rs60,000 others....

If you are married to a Mauritian citizen, you will automatically (ofcourse after completing a few formalities) benefit from a residence permit, and can live here as you wish (till you are married).
