Has anyone successfully applied for a permit?

Hey everyone, I've just signed up to this site as trawling through government info sites has me feeling pretty discouraged.

I am trying to figure out the best route to going about living and working in South Africa. The problem is I am an unskilled worker with not a whole lot of work experience behind me(im 20).

I was hoping to study and work to pay for college, but as one needs to prove they have the means to pay for tuition fees etc AND support themselves to get a study permit...i guess that counts me out!

I wont keep rambling because there is LOTS to ramble about on this subject. But any advise from anyone who has figured out a way through this(or something like it) would be fantastic!

it's not going to be particularly easy, if you don't have skills.

would you consider coming here to do a TEFL course and then staying on? or, getting a TEFL cert and then coming here to teach english as a foreign language?

Haha..languages and me dont mix. Thanks for the suggestion though. I'm thinking now that the best thing for me to do is study at a technikon, the fee's are not too high and i should have good enough marks. Fingers Crossed:)

check out southafrica.info... there are a few links there...

also try & check out the SA embassy website in your country, there might be some things there, or call the embassy to enquire. dont tell them that you are unskilled & that you want to earn while studying, generally be wary of what you say.. they are very protective about their being

Trust me, get your permit sorted out while still outside of SA, once you are here it is going to be really complicated & you will have to stand in Q's for hours...

It's very hard to obtain a work permit without a local company backing you up, I don't think you'll find one if you don't have a higher education or skills through experience.

I have no idea what the requirements for a study permit are but have heard about business permits - these would allow you to start a business聽 in SA but have probably high requirements concerning financing and such. May be worth checking out if you're still trying to get a visa!

you can always claim asylum, but not sure if that'll work
