Budget in mumbai

My question is simple. What is the average budget (let's forget the accomodation) for a middle class person in mumbai?

You should be comfortable to consider at least Rs.500-700 per day for a middle class life style excluding accommodation. It includes food, local travel by suburban trains or buses and other daily needs. Regards

If I love cooking would it be more expensive to buy groceries and cook for myself or would it be the same ?

It all depends on the facilities and time that you have. But yes if you have cooking facility and if you were to cook it will be cost effective and will save money on hand.

Yeah, Rs 500-600 will be good enough if you are cooking by yourself, but do note that travelling by public transport in Mumbai is something you might regret. It's way too crowded.
