This is looking a lot like a mechanical issue, the pilot requesting and being granted a return to Jakarta.
The aircraft was brought into service at the end of July so pretty much brand new.
The sad news is rescue agencies are not expecting to find survivors.

A vast majority of commercial aircraft are at a decent altitude after 10 minutes or so obviously this depends on air traffic and air traffic control and the countries regulations etc
Most aircraft of this description can fly / glide for 100 miles plus with total engine failure, by the descriptions I鈥檝e read and consistently reading 鈥� the aircraft falling鈥� it sounds much more serious than mechanical
Again I鈥檝e read numerous times that this aircraft (that crashed) has had nothing but 鈥渢echnical issues鈥� since being delivered

Manufacturer faults are a possibility as the aircraft was still very much new.
We'll find out once the black boxes are examined.

Certainly could be a manufacturing fault (but having been cleared the previous day that takes it away from Boeing) it鈥檚 previous 鈥渁lleged 鈥� faults that I have read from various media reports have been related to altitude and speed being different and unreliable, for the two pilots聽 very sad

Early indications from the 鈥渂lack box 鈥� suggest altitude and speed technology faults and similar faults have been found on the same equipment and aircraft within Indonesia and replaced,
A full independent enquiry is obviously needed with zero influence from any and all potential interests
Someone has ticked the box and wanted to go home early, extremely sad and should have/ could have been avoided if the above is accurate and confirmed

Early reports about the flight recorders are suggesting a fault that was left uncorrected or the repair was not conducted correctly.

Of course there's a long way to go yet and reports could still be prone to error so fairness suggests we have to be a little careful what we say at this point.

Wonder what's going on here - The notice would suggest a manufacturer's issue rather than a maintenance problem, but time will tell.

Boeing is planning to send a bulletin to 737 MAX jet operators as soon as Wednesday advising them of the procedure for dealing with erroneous cockpit readings that could cause a dive, a person briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The advice is based on preliminary information gathered in the investigation of Lion Air flight JT-610, which crashed into the Java Sea northeast of Jakarta last week, killing all 189 on board, the person said.

This is looking even more like a design fault
Of course there's a lot further to go and reports can be inaccurate, but such a warning and admission suggests there could be a lot more behind this than the poor maintenance suspected by some.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Boeing Co. plans to send safety warnings to the operators of its new Boeing 737 Max 8. This comes as the company`s response over the Lion Air flight JT-610crash that killed 189 people in Indonesia, based on preliminary investigation results of the fatal accident.

A bulletin from Boeing will alert airlines that an error in readings from flight monitoring system may cause the plane to dive suddenly.

Pilots are, under certain circumstances, must fly manually. The Boeing Max jets will automatically push down their noses when detecting possible aerodynamic stall.

Grounding them springs to mind

This far in and it's a blame game with court action, disputed statements, and threats of court action.



I'd read a lot of comments on various forums basically telling the world how Lion caused the crash but, much as there's clear evidence to show the aircraft had an issue on previous flights, there's nothing to say that wasn't fixed or had anything to do with the downing of this flight.
There is very strong evidence from pilots' groups the aircraft has a design issue, this having been confirmed by Boeing when they issued a note about a system few pilots seemed to be aware of, and a likely major factor to the crash.
None of this suggests Lion is either guilty or innocent, just we don't know yet so it's better to take media reports with a pinch of salt.

Back to media reports and why we have to be careful with them

The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is claiming the media erroneously reported that the Lion Air jetliner that crashed into the Java Sea last month was not airworthy.

鈥淲e would like to highlight that the KNKT and the head of its Aviation Investigation Subcommittee [Nurcahyo Utomo] never stated that the Lion Air aircraft, the Boeing 737-8 (MAX) registration PK-LQP, was not airworthy,鈥� the committee said in a statement on Thursday.

Of course they is blame, almost 200 people are dead because of a company or individuals incompetence, whether that is a design fault or human error they is blame and individuals should be held accountable
If like what is reported is factual with the device and if this is true, Boeing and lion are accountable and responsible for loss of life,

It's starting to look like these and many others have died for profits, not Lion's or anyone else's incompetence.
Boeing didn't report the new system to pilots, and they admit (by the fact their trying to fix the anti stall system) there's a design fault in the aircraft.
There also seems to be a serious issues with the airworthiness certification, Boeing doing what the FAA should have looked after (see news reports).
It's looking a lot like profits were put before lives.

Prison time? and some people really need to apologise to Lion air for the false blame they put on that company.

This one is hotting up quickly, the FBI now investigating the aircraft's certification.
If they certification was fixed, these sad events are an extremely serious criminal act, and people at Boeing should answer for any possible crimes committed.

The FBI has joined the criminal investigation into the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX, lending its considerable resources to an inquiry already being conducted by U.S. Department of Transportation agents, according to people familiar with the matter.

The federal grand jury investigation, based in Washington, D.C., is looking into the certification process that approved the safety of the new Boeing plane, two of which have crashed since October.

Officials probing the crash in Ethiopia of a Boeing 737 Max have preliminarily concluded that a flight-control feature automatically activated before it crashed, the Wall Street Journal says.

That looks like the result of the Ethiopian crash, and very probably the Lion air one as well.
It's looking more and more as if Lion had no fault in this terrible accident, but also looking like Boeing and the FAA have a lot of really difficult questions to answer.
