Fees to be paid upfront

mureedag

Good day

Hi, I'm currently living in South Africa and applied for work in Malaysia. Employment Contract was emailed to me but I received another email stating to contact their attorneys in able for them to process my residence and work permit. Also a fee needs to be paid to show I'm serious about getting the job. I'm scared of being scammed. Do this sound legit?

It's a scam. Definitely. Immigration don't make any charges to approve a work permit. This sounds like a typical scam in Malaysia.

Could you name the "employer" so others can be aware.  Just lately there has been  a scam run on hiring teachers for an international school. In the past there has been ones involving fake hospitals.

Thank you so much for reply. Its Istana medical centre in Malaysia. But the website and contact numbers is the same as the email they send me. I've called the number earlier and the person answered "istana medical centre" and I asked to speak to the person who emailed me, and he said Mr Shah will only be in on Monday-Friday 8-5 I should call then.

I don't recall an "Istana Medical Centre" to be honest - I am not sure what area of medicine you are in, but it's impossible to get a practice licence as a foreign doctor or nurse. Physio's can in private clinics. I read your profile and thought you were looking for a teaching job. Some of the latest scams are for jobs in East Malaysia, such as Kota Kinabalu or Kuching (Sarawak).

This is a link to another couple of scams reported on recently /forum/viewtopic.php?id=683643

Can you provide the website - I don't see a clinic by that name coming up in a Google Search.

Hi
No it's a medical professon and what I'm currently qualified in. I completed a TESOL course to keep my options open.

Well as mentioned - it's impossible to register because of protectionism of local healthcare jobs. In the past conartists have copied authentic hospital or clinic sites and just changed the contact details.

The method is always the same - get the person to pay money upfront for some services such as immigration, travel, accommodation, etc. REAL employers in Malaysia never ask for money (unless they are agents dealing with foreign workers - and SA is not one of the countries involved in FW recruitment - it is only countries in the Asian region and they are non-skilled jobs such as restaurant staff, agricultural workers, etc.)

Thank you so much for all your help. A really useful sight. Il keep you posted.

Do check out the rules for registration under the various health professions.

Will do, thanks

I also have never heard of Istana Medical Centre, but it really does sound like a scam, especially about asking for money upfront. Employment scams are very carefully organized with several people and several numbers supposedly for different people within an organization such as HR department, Managers etc. The dead giveaway is when they ask for money upfront.

But I don't know it's real or fake job offer.

It's actually quite entertaining reading those letters :)

High Court Justice???

Basically for any overseas job offer that you suspect (or even don't suspect) is a scam, you need to yourself at least search on google to find the website and contact details for the company that is supposedly offering you a job, and find a telephone number on that website and then call directly and speak to the relevant person concerned with job applications to see if a job offer is real. Do not use any of the telephone numbers or names provided by the scammer, but find them yourself from the real website (if it exists) of the company offering you a job. And never ever send money in advance. Who would want to work for a company that requires you yourself to pay fees upfront?

Unfortunately, some people do get scammed or almost scammed and quit their previous jobs before finding out that it is a scam.

Gravitas

It's a scam. The jobs are fake. There is no such medical centre. Don't pay.

I checked the official list of solicitors in Malaysia too - no such company -

The solicitor  "website" is fake - none of the icons work.

Please make a full report to the commercial crime desk by email (forward emails, phone numbers used in the scam, etc. and explain what has happened).

As I said earlier, I checked the official list of legal firms in Malaysia and there is not one called Bunga - the whole thing is a job scam.  Please report it to the commercial crimes (cybercrime) at the email address provided above.

I just submitted email to police in Malaysia.
