Prices are based on how new a place is usually, not so much area.  So Brickfields the rents can be RM5k per month or much less for older places RM2k. There are very few 1 bedroom places and so they are at a premium. You could get a 2 bedroom fully furnished for around RM2-3k per month.

Prices are similar in the whole of KL area based on quality and location. Lots of food items are price fixed as well.

Utility bills = electricity depends on consumption so if you use aircon then expensive. RM200 + Internet/TV RM250 + Phone RM150

Car lease RM1500 per month + Fuel RM250

Transportation expenses depends on distance RM 200

Don't know what you mean by outing - if you mean to visit somewhere in Malaysia for a weekend RM1000

Entertainment (see TV above) RM200

Tax - work on paying 20% of salary and there may be other deductions for pension (EPF) or health insurance, etc.

Savings 3-4K

To do the above you will need to ask for a salary of RM14k

Thank you for the quick reply on my query about KL COL.

I really appreciate your response and it make my initial things clear and I will try to ask for monthly salary of 15K.

But I do have some more  doubts, I am sorry to bother you much.

My further queries are as below:
Rent/Place to live: Being a couple and focusing on the saving and good lifestyle, I heard that Master room (Fully Furnished) is the best option and cheap to live which include the Utility bills with-in. and Cost somewhere RM 1-1.5 K.
Tax: I heard for expats the tax rate is flat 26% for the 6 months each year and get refund while filing the Income Tax Return by the end of the Financial year which is Jan to December.

If you talked about the Car and Petrol expenses then what is the Transportation for?

I am really sorry to bother you with my simple queries, but I am doing my homework under your expert level guidance.

Generally speaking, the COL in Malaysia is 30% higher than India.



Brickfields is one of the traditional Indian quarters so it has provisions and an atmosphere to match. Cyberjaya is a new area and modern, about 40 KM south of KL City (Twin Towers) and near the airport.

You can try and flat share and the cost varies considerably. Bills (electricity, water, gas) are usually extra and shared. Don't forget that even if you share a property you are usually asked to pay a deposit of up to 2 1/2 months rental - but it differs.

RM200 transportation is in case you have the car and your wife needs to go out (taxi, bus, train). Cyberjaya is not well connected transport-wise. It is also far away from KL City, but has its own facilities (shops etc.)

Tax - This is based on tax residency. i.e. if in the first year you do not live/work in Malaysia for 183 days in the calendar year  (Jan - Dec) the tax rate is a flat 26%. NO REFUND.

By the way the top tax rate in Malaysia on salaries over RM100k per year is also 26% - to put that into perspective.

Once you are tax resident you pay the standard tax rates which is on a sliding scale (with a RM9k allowance i.e. first RM9 is free of income tax)
