Teaching in Taiwan with a 2/3rds online degree?

Hi all,

I鈥檓 currently applying for TEFL jobs in Taiwan. Come summer I will have graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree from a physical university - the only problem is that for the first two years of my degree program I was studying at The Open University, which though accredited is an online school.

My degree will say the name of my physical uni on it, but my transcripts will explain that I was at a remote uni for the first two years. A recruiter that I spoke to today told me that Taiwan doesn鈥檛 accept ESL teachers who鈥檝e done their degrees at online unis - at the same time, he seemed to think that because I鈥檒l be graduating from a brick uni it might not matter.

Is this issue going to stop me from teaching in Taiwan? I really want to teach there, and the thought of being unable to makes me very sad

Have you researched studying Mandarin in Taiwan as a means of getting out there?

Back in 1987 I applied for a BACS scholarship and I chose the 12 month one to study at the Mandarin Training Center (National Taiwan Normal University) in Taipei. The scholarship covered school fees, food and rent. While I was there I taught English to my neighbours daughter, secretaries at a trading company, a movie actress and evening classes at the Taiwan Political University. It's actually the only time I have ever taught English in my life, and I didn't even have a teaching degree and no teaching experience. My point is that maybe you could consider other options of just getting out to Taiwan.

MOEducation has strict arcane degree rules what constitutes a degree. In 1990鈥檚 My Taiwanese wife read their guidelines, checked with university, I earned an accredited online MA, and was blocked from full time university position. Waste of time and money. (Uni of Phoenix online.) I still Taught there for years part time and earned less money. .02$
