I will move to thailand May next year or as soon as the visa is approved (marriage O visa)
i work for an international company based in Holland but the UK group are happy for me to work anywhere as we operate 100% remote working. So long as Im available for Teamd meetings in the UK.
i assume this is OK for thai authorities as im not working for a thai company?

There is actually a visa specifically for people in your situation. You may well meet all the criteria - most people have an issue because they are independent contractors or their employer is too small.

Search for ‘long-term residents visa Thailand’ and start with the search result from the BOI - government agency who help process applications for these visas. The one you want to look at is Work-from-Thailand professionals.

You’ll need to be careful about tax but it shouldn’t be complicated (just make sure you get it right in both countries) as there will be applicable double tax agreements. Anyway that is triggered by how long you are here each tax year and isn’t really related to the via - just they’ll want to see your tax affairs are in order.

BOI are very helpful and will usually answer any questions promptly.

And if you can’t go for that, then yes for now it tends to be ignored but if you trigger Thai tax residency (non-O marriage visa suggests you will) as trigger point is 180 days) and are here a long time you could get in some trouble down the road. Keep your head down and be careful what you (and your wife) say.  Everything will be so much nicer with the legal option.

Given what you say you are going to do, then I strongly advise you to engage a lawyer in Thailand and get their advice (not a Thai lawyer - an Expat).  You are married to a Thai and that is a big issue - if you break the rules and get caught, you will be in serious trouble - especially regarding 'working' and not paying tax (to Thailand). The big problem is that you could end up being deported and blacklisted - and not able to return to Thailand for a long period of time.  Single people doing this 'head down avoid trouble' tactic is OK because in the end if caught they go home (and try Philippines etc.). But as you are married to a Thai you are running a huge risk. IMO if you do it, you should make it fully legal and compliant with Thai laws - get a lawyer.

This is a grey area

To work in Thailand - even voluntary work - you need a work permit.

There see to be a lot of people working on line in Thaiand and the Thai authorities are not doing anything about it.

In the end if someone wants to tell the authorities they are duty bound to act.

Also there is the question of tax - they will be upset if you don't pay tax.

I would get a work permit. You'll need an agent to do tis as only certain jobs are open to non-Thai nationals.
