Quality of customer service in Thailand

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in Thailand, and for many expats, it鈥檚 something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in Thailand?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in Thailand?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

Thailand works largely on the "caveat emptor" principle 鈥 many people are swept away by what they perceive as "service" at their hotels 鈥 e.g., a towel on the bed twisted to look like a swan and lots of uniformed staff scurrying about... (this applies to most businesses in Thailand where face outweighs substance). The visitor or expat often forgets that because wages are so low, most businesses can afford to have a lot of staff performing menial tasks.

5-star service costs nothing in Thailand

However, the problems start when you have problems.

Once they have your money, that's it. If the aircon doesn't work, they may or may not fix it but would never offer another room or discount.

In the UK they have "fair trade" laws which legally expect product performance 鈥 put simply, if you buy a car, you expect it to have 4 wheels and take you places; food should not be toxic; a pair of shoes should last a reasonable time 鈥 no such consumer protection exists to any extent in Thailand. Most people luckily avoid these sorts of problems, but everyone needs to be prepared for such events should they occur 鈥 don't rely on the type of redress you may get at home, as it doesn't exist.

Also bear in mind that if you do have any problem, whatever it may be, NEVER RAISE YOUR VOICE 鈥 if you do, you have lost completely
