Need help!

Hello,

I am new to this forum, from USA. Looking for input聽 from retirees or others who have taken this journey.

How did you make this journey? I feel mentally stuck trying to wrap my mind around how to begin the process, that is, selling everything, applying to visas and choosing one, deciding where to live - worry about the smoke but hopefully can move temporarily to southern area or go to a near by country.聽 Any advice on how to begin the planning process will be greatly appreciated.

we are planning a vacation to Thailand, so far it will be just Bangkok to see if we even like that area.

It may be useful to create a checklist. It鈥檚 also wise that you are visiting before making any major decisions. Spend some time getting to know the areas of interest. There鈥檚 plenty of information on visas on YouTube. But, I recommend double checking information or triangulating it from several sources. Finally, you mentioned selling everything. While being rid of excessive material baggage can be liberating, selling everything is a significant step that should be considered carefully.

Hi Kaid!聽 Sounds like you're getting the first step right:聽 visit your prospective countries before you do anything else!

Comparison:聽 I've been to Thailand four times for business over the past 30+ years, took my wife there for our honey moon a few decades back.聽 I've seen Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.聽 I am planning to spend a few months checking out living in the area I think will be to my taste (Hua Hin), hopefully starting January of next year.

It is my third from my list of 7 countries I am looking at (all but one I've been to multiple times.)聽 The first two, with several advantages (the number of times I had visited each for both business and vacations, fact that I am completely bilingual in the language, etc.) still seemed to be missing something.

So I have NOT sold my house, shipped my furnishings, etc., and will NOT until I've spent multiple months, preferably in different areas of a country, and feel certain I've found my new home!

Good luck, and I think requesting help on this site is a good first step, for any of the countries you may be considering!

Don't sell everything. Take some time and visit different countries

ad see for yourself what you like best. I checked out Mexico, Belize,

Costa Rica and landed in Thailand. Everywhere you go there will be

pros and cons. Just need to weigh all things considered. Definitely

rent before you buy wherever it is you decide to go.

visiting family.

Thank you to all for your suggestions. Got lots of reading to do before we make this decision.

Kaid,

1st to look hard at is your money,聽 the monthly retirement income if you have it.

Do not look at the one time income from saling something or the income from something that you have to be around to manage or participate in any way out side getting a deposit to your bank account.聽 聽If you do not have the income and expecting to use the money from a sale of whatever you may want to stay in the USA.聽

1st is money in a passive income.

2ed your heath how good is it and with your parents and other older ones how was theirs.聽 Remember Medicare and even the advantage programs you can change to in Medicare do not cover anything outside the US.聽 And hospitals, doctors here is if you can't pay now then no treatment for anything.聽 You have a cut or a hart attack it's all the same no money or proven ability to pay after they treat you then no treatment for you. Your life is your responsibility not theirs.聽 They get involved when you can prove that you can pay.聽 Do not stop paying your usa Medicare or advantage premiums every month.聽 If you ever go back to the USA and need to use it you will have to pay your monthly premium at say 4 times what you would have then what you would have to pay and that higher cost never goes down that is your new rate from then on for life.聽 Buying health insurance for coverage in a foreign country is not cheap if they will even cover you remembered you are not young and will have problems and the insurance company know this and my not cover what you need just what the government wants.

3rd聽 what are your real and true feelings on heat, humidity,聽 sex, pot, no local safety net for anything,聽 seeing and being around the poor as to most locals you are the rich one and they make a lot less than you. Not being able to work for a income, renting where you live, as only you can buy a condo that the complex that that is under 49% foreign owned all other ways are a crime but the sales people will sale to you and having a deed is prof you commit the crime not prof of ownership. You and or your partner will be hit on to exchange their time for money yes sex. From the tourist spots to everywhere,聽 and to invest in every thing where your local so call lawyers are apart of the scam.聽 You will be shown real need from someone you come to know and starting to trust show you pictures of the need a person in a hospital bed, a animal in desperate need and more and it's all a fake. You will be ripped off but by how much and can you recover from the loss.

No place in the world is a fairy tale. Think about how many in the USA are actively seeking to take from you and out side the USA it does not stop it just has a different plan on how to with different rules to allow them too. Remember this is not your country and it will never be. You are a guest with money to spend here and they have the right to tell you to leave at anytime.聽 No matter with you own or think you own in a country.

I am presuming that you are meddle class.

That you plan to live here as a usa meddle class people.聽 This takes more of everything than living like a local. Here we have two price structure the local price and your the rich non local. You will probably always pay more. The laws are for the most part for the locals,聽 not you. You have some type of problem it's your fault most of the time and you will need to pay.聽 This is the way the world is. Remember you are not home, this is not nor will it ever be your home like you would understand your home in the USA.聽 You are a vistor and will always be one out side the usa. Becoming a聽 citizen of this country is many decades and very unlikely here. So do not count on it.

Look for me it's a great place and I love it here. I know the rules I accept them and the people and culture as it is. I do not attempt to change them or this place. I know what I am to this place and to the locals I interact with.聽 I enjoy being here. But if you want to change anything here or can not deal with it as it is then here is not the place for you.

Coming here for a few day to decide is crazy.聽 Come here in the off season and if you like it then for the 3 months of the high season you will enjoy it more.聽 Out side the water festival as it's mostly for the younger ones.聽 The older ones like me leave the town or country for a short trip to anywhere else.聽

Come with a open mind and hart. Expect to be ripped off a bit as anywhere just control the amount.聽 Never tell anyone how much money you have or when you get it.

Deal with real lawyers not someone says they are. Get your "O" visa and local phone number. Local bank account.聽 Learn how to live here and flow like the water in the聽 streets in rainy season.聽 Enjoy your time and life.聽 You are not coming here to change them you are coming to be change by them in a good way.聽 Look out for the bad but most are looking and living for the good.

You must maintain a usa real address not a post box for your American bank account,聽 Medicare or advantage plan,聽 drivers license. If not expect problems with anything government in the usa. So until you learn by being and living anywhere do not invest, buy anything major,聽 rent it if must have it. If you plan to live in a city then no car or motorcycle.聽 If you plan to live in the county I would wait till you have been here for a few years聽 聽yes years.

Anyway good luck.

Any how I sold everything was the house and all of its contents to one of the we will buy your house people.聽 Yes I got less, for everything.聽 But saling one piece at a time was too painful for me as I spent a life time getting what I had and letting it go at one garage sale at a time was gutting my self with a very dull blade.聽 So I sold it all at one time.聽 For me it hurt less and the loss I could take from trying to get every dollar I could but it costs you to do that.

Think, learn, try it a lot before you do the final steps.

@Walnutcharles

Thank you for such insight on the reality of living there. Loved your 鈥渇low like the waters on the street during rainy season鈥澛 I hear you on letting go of the possessions slowly, although painful at times, it is liberating.

I feel that renting will allow me flexibility to move to other areas if I don鈥檛 like one, looking to not feel stuck by a home.

You mention keeping an address in USA, for someone who doesn鈥檛 have anyone to count on for physical address, is there a mail company you can suggest?

Hope you stay safe, healthy and enjoying life there. Take care!

Have not really put it to the test yet, but I've had

iPostal.com

recommended as where SOME franchisees may be willing to send scans/photos of envelopes, selectively open them if requested to do the same with contents, and possibly even ship important papers and such.

Do your own investigating and verifying.....!!
