Navigating friendships as an expat in Thailand

Hello everyone,

Moving to Thailand reshapes many aspects of life, and friendships are often one of the biggest changes. Whether you're maintaining lifelong bonds back home, building new local relationships, or forming connections with fellow expats, friendship in expatriation comes with its own joys and challenges. We invite you to share your experience to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats:

Have you found it easy to connect with fellow expats or locals in Thailand? Why or why not?

Have you noticed cultural differences in the way people make friends or share personal matters?

Since moving to in Thailand, how have your friendships back home evolved? Do you ever feel 鈥渙ut of sync鈥 with friends and family in your home country?

How do you deal with the temporary nature of many expat friendships when people (or you) eventually move on?

Have you changed the way you approach relationships since becoming an expat?

What has been your biggest challenge in building or maintaining friendships in Thailand? Any advice to share?

Thank you for your contribution,

Cheryl

@Cheryl.聽 聽We are a couple in our mid 70's and we have never been able to find friends in Thailand, we are going on 14 years now.聽 We don't have anything in common with the average Thai person. We lived in the US before moving to Thailand.聽 聽My wife is Thai but we met in the US and live there together for 30 years.聽 Most Thai people have family's and our children are grown so nothing in common there.聽 We don't drink much or smoke and we avoid the bar scene.聽 We live in a Thai area so not much contact with foreigners but we had a place in Cha Am for 5 years but only saw Russians, and Indian people, most of the European people live in Gated Community and they stayed with there own kind of people.聽 We are going to try one last time with InterNations in Bangkok to see if we can meet some couples are age.聽 We have a Great many friends back in Northern California but haven't seen them since 2019.聽 We don't feel like it's safe there any longer.聽 So we meet our friends in other countries and the ones who can no longer travel we make video calls to them.聽 聽Thailand is our home now.

The only friendships I've been able to make in the kingdom has been through the Pickleball Club. That sort of makes it easy to be with people in a common interest and it's inherently a social game. Even when it rains there are indoor courts.

If you have an interest to find others with the similar interest and make social of it.

We dont what friends that drink, smoke, do drugs (legal or not) or is super negative !!!

And all foreigner we run into fit 1 or more of that.

So around 11 years ago i stop looking for foreigner friends.

Lucky we have so many Thai family and Thai friends, And our friends family and there friends and so on.

We have way to many to visits, And when we live in Nonthaburi & Bangkok we was invite every week to go 1-3 places, So when we move to Bang Saen we agree on to cut back on visits,

My wife have a friends that touched by Buddha, And she invite us to join in when she do what she can, Because of that.

That have be great experience, And her and her family do a lot of good, Like give food, water, Ice cream or whatever at temple around Thailand all the time.

We join them a few times a year, And it is great when i start give item away, The queue grow fast.

So many Thai want to come and get what we give and have a few words with the foreigner.

When finish go around, Eating, I be lock after by all the old girls +70 years from my wife friend family is so nice, And we laughing so much :-)

Other friend we have, Have a farm north of Bangkok and when we go there.

We help a little with the work, Then her family start coming, Bringen vegetables, Meat and so on from others farm, And then the family start cooking together.

Everyone can to talk, And everyone listen.

But most family & friends is to come together and eat, Enjoy and talk together.

MAybe at someone home or we go out.

When we move to Bang Saen, A few weeks before we start clean the house and paint it.

Our neighbours come and look into us, Bring us food, snacks, drinks and welcome us to the street.

After moving here, I start giving Cooks made from Danish recipe for Christmas to people with kids on our street, So all the kids on our street like us :-)

I talk to some of our neighbours every day.

Sometime they bring so ekstra fruit.

Some time they ask for a little help.

I am very happy with my life and friends we have, Cant wish for more.

Kindly.

@Never done that聽 聽You are very lucky.聽 We don鈥檛 have children but we support 3 families in Cha Am and one children's school.聽 We also give to the Hua Hin Hero's a group of expat's that help the less fortunate and build schools and houses.聽 Because of our age we don鈥檛 get to those meetings anymore聽 and we stay more now in Nonthaburi .聽 聽We donate to various temples all year around.聽 My wife has a large Thai family鈥檚 but they all are busy with their families and we are never invited. Only when they have a family鈥檚 function maybe everybody 2-3 months.聽 I resent the fact that we are never included in family activity's because everyone visited us in California and we took them everywhere , rented vans took them to聽 Yosemite , Lake Tahoe, Arizona , Los Angelas, baseball games, all over San Francisco, and the wine country, Carmel, Big Sur, and more, and we paid for everything .聽 We stillness pay every time we get together for lunch or dinner.聽 We are the families ATM machine.聽 And the family's is much wealthier than we are they all own property鈥檚聽 though out Thailand.聽 I would say we are just not Lucky.聽 聽Back in Trump land we have many friends but it鈥檚聽 not safe to visit that world theres days, we haven鈥檛 visited since the end of 2019.聽 But I sure miss those friends .

@scbrock聽 聽 These days I swim and the wife uses a treadmill .聽 聽To old for much more.

@California4me

It dont sound good to me.

And i have hear from many foreigner resemble stories as yours.

I dont understand your wife allows her family to do that to you !!!

My wife (Same goes for our Thai family and Thai friends) are never going to allow anyone to do that to me.

I dont understand you, As the end of the day, You can simple say no, or no more.

About ATM machine.

I still remember 2 weeks after moving to Thailand and it was time to meet my wife (GF back then) family the first time, and all the cards was on the table.

My wife dad told me.

The family are never going to ask me for money, As that not the Thai way of doing it.

My duty is to help my own family back home, and build a life together with my wife, That it.

And if the day every come they ask me for money (like paying every time we come together), I KNOW they lost all respekt for me.

And dont see me as family anymore.

I am sure i being lucky, But i all so spend the first 3 years "dating" my wife to get to know her, her family and friends, So i knew 100% what i join.

Kindly.

@California4me

I believe it's just important to stay active any way you can.

I do the treadmill and swim on days I don't make it to the

pickleball.

Do what you are comfortable doing we had a gentleman

who was in his 80's that was a regular pickle player.
