Employment Options and Background Check

kolgotki

hi.

I am considering moving to Vietnam in the next two years.

What kind of jobs can I get as an expat? Also, I will be in my early fifties coming from States.

Do they care about criminal background?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi there kolgotki! Allow me to second Bhavna's welcome!

(thank you Bhavna for opening this new topic for our new member)

hi.
I am considering moving to Vietnam in the next two years.

Big step. Have you visited Vietnam before?

What kind of jobs can I get as an expat?

That depends entirely on your work experience. The absolute minimum requirement to teach English, a major area of employment for expats, is a Bachelor's degree (any discipline). Outside of teaching, you would have to show documented expertise in a given field. Further, the "expert" position must not be able to be filled by a Vietnamese, which then allows an employer to apply for a work permit on your behalf. The employer procures the work permit, not the foreign employee/applicant.

Also, I will be in my early fifties coming from States.

There is no cut-off age for employment in Vietnam, so your age will not be an impediment.

Do they care about criminal background?

Yes. An employer must provide the results of your criminal background check when applying for your work permit.

Thanks for any help in advance.

@Bhavna

I would like to teach English in school. What kind of background check is needed, if any?

@kolgotki You will need a check from a state.  Strangely I think that the bureaucracy does not even check whether or not it is really your home state. Some states have online documents which you can subsequently notarize and others require you to show up in person. I used to keep a listing of all 50 but it is likely dated by now. You could get an FBI check but the time it takes to arrive will eat up most of the time that Vietnam allows for the age of the check, rendering it impractical.

Perhaps a more important consideration is what have you been convicted of.  If you have a felony conviction, perhaps you should rule out teaching as an occupation.
