Congratulations on your move!

Agreed on the Duolingo shortcomings.

There's nothing better than a structured, face to face classroom setting. That, and a professor/teacher/instructor who's willing to be (unapologetically/brutally) honest with you when you mispronounce a word. Vietnamese tutors I find to be much too forgiving when dealing with someone with whom they've become "friends".

I suggest you contact (link)

Ask about admission requirements for their (link)

If possible for you, opt for the "Onsite" training, as opposed to their offer of "Online" training.

Please keep the forum up to date on your progress, and best of luck.

Best way is to follow the example of Vietnamese children and learn their language the way they do.

Natural language acquisition is slower but you tend to pick up the grammar better.

If you want a teacher, find someone who will teach you sets of vocab with basic sentences around those words.

The kitchen

The House

The office

etc.

It's a pencil -聽 it's a 2B pencil - it's a green 2B pencil - it's a long, green, 2B pencil

I use a pencil to write/draw/whatever.

I was implying absolute and total immersion with a Vietnamese family who don't speak English.

I know one young guy from California who did this 5 years ago. He now speaks absolutely fluent Ti岷縩g Vi峄噒 that totally amazes every Vietnamese person with whom he speaks

Some people have a gift for language learning.聽 Poor sods such as my handsome and sexy self, have to learn the bit by bit way.

I learnt the basics of Indonesian first, then progressed (as Edmund did) to ordering a pink gin and saying 鈥淒o you do it doggy-doggy?鈥

That always seems to be the key.聽 After 6 years I still don't know much at all.聽 Actually picked up a bit more the last year as my wife is only speaking Vietnamese to our two year old.聽 She still gets frustrated because she is with him all day and I see him for a couple of hours and he only speaks English!聽 He definitely understands Vietnamese though.

@OceanBeach92107聽 聽 Only my wife speaks english in my house, but the youngest (5yo) and 3d daughter (10yo)are being taught english in school.聽 聽I have accumulated a lot of baby talk (and country folk talk) Vietnamese, was looking for a more structured solution.聽 聽Google translate is used a lot in my house, helps all of us.聽 聽 I am not exactly fond of absolute correctness, and I understand a lot more than I speak.聽 聽 聽Thanks to all
