Second to no understand what saying you all about

The problem arises in that when you speak English the tone does not matter so much. Australians finish every sentence with a rising tone, in England we only do that when asking a question, but it does not change the meaning of the words.
In Vietnamese teh tones are often subtle differences and as such a single tone can change the complete meaning of a word. Reading\writing is far easier as the characters are easily identified, but when speaking the tones are so subtle and like every where else in the world regional accents have a part to play. I speak a little Viet but always with a Saigon accent, so when I venture north I am often even less understood.

It's a tough language to master even at an elementary level. English on the other hand is easier to get to a reasonable communication level in a short period of time.

I know what she's talking about.

Some people having difficulty speaking but can understand and write alright like me. I can understand Vietnamese when someone is speaking it to me and read and write it but can't speak it in a way most can understand what I'm saying.

Same with my English. I can read, write and understand but despite 35 years living in Canada some can't understand my English as well.

What she's trying to say is her friend and people in general just want to learn to speak but neglect to learn all the other skills required in a conversation such as listening and understanding what people are saying.

So when 2 people that only master the speaking skills talk to each other they might as well talk to the wall.

A lot of people try to learn Vietnamese and they give up because it is a tonal language and for some this is a barrier they simply can't go over. If you say (English) Car,cAr,caaar,caRRR etc people might understand you especially if the word is in context. But say a Vietnamese word in wrong tone and they will look at you like you have fallen from they sky,even if you are standing there trying to other simple bread. So they just use body language,point to what they want and that's it..

Yeah that's all I'm good at is understanding girls makes up for my lack of money.

careful buddy,your new wife might not like you chatting and drinking coffee with other Vietnamese ladies It is a big no no with some traditional families,it can even bring shame to them if you are seen in public by their friends or someone who knows them.

good point. Actually I was just talking with my new wife about my habits of randomly talking and making friends with strangers. She said I'm not allowed to randomly make friends with Vietnamese strangers especially any girls Vietnamese or not. But she said it's ok I make friends with Western guys.

So looks like I'm caged for a while unless you're a Western guy.
