The agents here work the same way the banks do, they work on percentages,you pay a certain amount of what you buy. Here they also allow you to buy up to the day before the dividend due date, something that surprised me. The other thing is the way they figure out the dividend payment and you also pay 5% tax on dividends received. Not all shares are available to foreigners, but that is changing very quickly as the government owns many of the companies and can make a nice dollar from this. It's not a very big market as per volume or value of shares but it's growing each and every year. I know squat about the market just what I have learnt since buying here over the last 12 months.

Thanks. Liquidity sounds like an issue. And if you sell stocks do you have to wait t+3 days to buy again? If you do that'll be a huge problem.

Fee wise it doesn't like enticing. I'll probably wait for the next recession before buying any stocks. It's been almost 8 years since last recession in the US.

That 0.64% in Canada sounds steep.聽 聽 聽I'm paying 0.12% with brokers in Australia with further discounts on multiple trades within a month.

If sacombank are at .25% depending on the tiered arrangement it's getting closer to reasonable.

Normally on the foreign exchanges you can trade immediately from a sell order executed, since the settlement funds are held in a "trade" account for 2 days prior to going to your cash account.聽 聽 HERE?....do they have that system??聽 聽 If not , your at a huge disadvantage having funds in limbo while buy opportunities go begging if your waiting on those funds.

I personally wouldn't touch the Vietnam market.聽 聽The prisons are full of dodgy bank workers and company execs.聽 聽The balance sheets of a lot of companies here are "cooked"聽 and barely worth wiping your ass with.

But if you like living on the edge , give it a shot.

I often think a safe way of investing in Vietnam is by finding a blue chip multinational that operates here with positive growth forecasts and rising dividends, and buy stock in that company thru a reputable broker .

If you really are optimistic about Vietnamese stocks, there are ETF's and other funds that one can buy into on western markets.聽 With an online brokerage, they could be less expensive to trade than stocks on the VN exchange.

As far as overcharging, you won't know if you have been overcharged unless you know the costs of everything. I had com t芒m the other night at a new place, I know the price and of course the owner thought she could overcharge the Anh Tay, it happens, trust me, your being very naive if you think it won't.

Coll I am sure you are right. the sales person in me wants to always see the positive. I have challenges working with my viet team mates sometimes....bc their mindset is different. But I love the sights, the smells, the scenery of Vietnam....and the low cost of living is a pig plus..... No I am scared of the price of stocks here.....haha but I just want to always see the positive, and try to fix....business wise the negative........聽 聽maybe I have been over charged some where....The only place I thought was excessive at a western stake house in district one...... I suppose it helps because I have so many viet friends ...co workers and such, that they watch out for me......my woman loves me to no end....she has spent way more money on me than I have ever spent on her. She will come for a visit, and when she leaves, I find a fridge full of food....soups cooked and frozen so I can just heat up......I was wondering why I never got an electric bill and found out she paid it for me.....she didn't tell me I had to inquire.....When it get where I don't love it....I'll leave haha....but no stocks for me please!

I'm more a blue chip investor and I stay away from speculative stocks .

I agree Vietnam's stock market is not reliable and is known to fudge the books. Vincom is the only company that had independent foreign audits otherwise most companies stocks are easily manipulated.

I was thinking try a small amount I'm comfortable losing in the Vietnam market just to see what the water is like.
