Anyone buy stocks on the Ho Chi Minh stock exchange?

Trying to figure out which brokerage to go with and figuring out all the fees for buying and selling stocks.

The brokerage I deal with in Canada charges 0.64%/stock and if I trade more stocks in a month my fees is even lower.

Reading Sacombank securities for example they have a tiered fees of all sorts.

Stock transaction fee of of 0.25% under 100 mil VND. So they charge fees on how much money you use? That can be costly if you spend a lot of money.

Than they have this securities transfee fee:

"1 VND/share/transaction (minimum VND 50,000/transaction and maximum VND 1,000,000/transaction/Share)"

Just confusinng with the language barrier and trying to understand how the ho chi minh stock exchange work.

If anyone has time to explain all this to me over coffee I would be grateful. And if not I'd like to hear your experiences buying and selling stocks in Vietnam either directly or online.

The agents here work the same way the banks do, they work on percentages,you pay a certain amount of what you buy. Here they also allow you to buy up to the day before the dividend due date, something that surprised me. The other thing is the way they figure out the dividend payment and you also pay 5% tax on dividends received. Not all shares are available to foreigners, but that is changing very quickly as the government owns many of the companies and can make a nice dollar from this. It's not a very big market as per volume or value of shares but it's growing each and every year. I know squat about the market just what I have learnt since buying here over the last 12 months.

Thanks. Liquidity sounds like an issue. And if you sell stocks do you have to wait t+3 days to buy again? If you do that'll be a huge problem.

Fee wise it doesn't like enticing. I'll probably wait for the next recession before buying any stocks. It's been almost 8 years since last recession in the US.

That 0.64% in Canada sounds steep.聽聽聽I'm paying 0.12% with brokers in Australia with further discounts on multiple trades within a month.

If sacombank are at .25% depending on the tiered arrangement it's getting closer to reasonable.

Normally on the foreign exchanges you can trade immediately from a sell order executed, since the settlement funds are held in a "trade" account for 2 days prior to going to your cash account.聽聽 HERE?....do they have that system??聽聽 If not , your at a huge disadvantage having funds in limbo while buy opportunities go begging if your waiting on those funds.

I personally wouldn't touch the Vietnam market.聽聽The prisons are full of dodgy bank workers and company execs.聽聽The balance sheets of a lot of companies here are "cooked"聽 and barely worth wiping your ass with.

But if you like living on the edge , give it a shot.

I often think a safe way of investing in Vietnam is by finding a blue chip multinational that operates here with positive growth forecasts and rising dividends, and buy stock in that company thru a reputable broker .

Yogis been doing that .聽聽It's working ok.

Leaving the great southern suffering was the best move for me too.

Dunno about the smart part, but watching friends lose the lot in 2008
I wouldn't touch the S&S market: full stop.聽聽And given the (too many)
pundits predicting the next recession, I split my values into assets,
gold & cash.聽聽But I think I have enough to not worry.聽聽You sound Ok
since you already know it is in the travelling, not arrival.

Adapting well?聽聽Glad to hear someone else is!聽聽This is mind-bendingly
the best place to be - and it just keeps getting better!!!

If you really are optimistic about Vietnamese stocks, there are ETF's and other funds that one can buy into on western markets.聽 With an online brokerage, they could be less expensive to trade than stocks on the VN exchange.

I owned VCVOF several years ago but sold it as it was drifting downward.聽 I don't know about the London funds but VNM is probably more liquid then VCVOF which I recall took me a few days to sell.聽 Personally, I don't think any of these look too good and the underlying stocks may not be any better.

This will probably get removed as off topic, so I'll put some "topic" I won't invest in it either...ha ha Yogi and Bazra you may remember me the American....who wanted to come well I'm here....been here close to three months and loving it ! job stressful at times..... Dealing with VN factories as a trader is a challenge but my God I love the place and people. Won't lie Miss some of my American foods and yes my family but nothing else......

Feel safe.

yes sir I came "home" at fifty years old.....never been treated better in my life. Yes there is much different but thats ok....That's why I came, when you work and live with good people not much more you can ask for

you were a big inspiration Bazza..... maybe i've been luck or just hang with the right people but I've so far found all the bad stuff foreignors say about viets is not been the case with me. i havent been over charged.... they go out of their way to help me . ----free! and they look out for my saftey and welfare?????? how could you not love these people!!!!! they open their homes up and share their food with me!!!!!

As far as overcharging, you won't know if you have been overcharged unless you know the costs of everything. I had com t芒m the other night at a new place, I know the price and of course the owner thought she could overcharge the Anh Tay, it happens, trust me, your being very naive if you think it won't.

I have severe doubts it's just me.聽聽Empirical evidence proves a positive attitude gives positive results because (even) if we stuff it up, we also learn to do it better.

聽聽Ivan Petrovich Pavlov won the Nobel prize for his studies on the digestive system which still stand today, 100 yrs on.聽聽But we (mostly) remember only the dogs...聽聽

So if we begin by looking for positives, we find them.聽

Coll I am sure you are right. the sales person in me wants to always see the positive. I have challenges working with my viet team mates sometimes....bc their mindset is different. But I love the sights, the smells, the scenery of Vietnam....and the low cost of living is a pig plus..... No I am scared of the price of stocks here.....haha but I just want to always see the positive, and try to fix....business wise the negative........聽聽maybe I have been over charged some where....The only place I thought was excessive at a western stake house in district one...... I suppose it helps because I have so many viet friends ...co workers and such, that they watch out for me......my woman loves me to no end....she has spent way more money on me than I have ever spent on her. She will come for a visit, and when she leaves, I find a fridge full of food....soups cooked and frozen so I can just heat up......I was wondering why I never got an electric bill and found out she paid it for me.....she didn't tell me I had to inquire.....When it get where I don't love it....I'll leave haha....but no stocks for me please!

sorry not 0.64%. My broker charges about $0.55/stock and less if I trade more.聽

I'm more a blue chip investor and I stay away from speculative stocks .

I agree Vietnam's stock market is not reliable and is known to fudge the books. Vincom is the only company that had independent foreign audits otherwise most companies stocks are easily manipulated.

I was thinking try a small amount I'm comfortable losing in the Vietnam market just to see what the water is like.

Gong back to your original post, I wonder if the 1VND fee is a government tax.聽 I know a similar tax has been proposed in the US as a way of curbing electronic trading, although I would think revenue generation may be what is happening in Vietnam.
