Apart from the obvious motorcycle question, perhaps expats in Vietnam could offer information regarding safety if someone mentions their and their family's military background.
Is there any resentment or ill feeling around?

I have done 5 major overland on & off road motorbike trips in Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia inc HCM trail & have never ever had any animosity shown me or my friends infact the opposite, the people are friendly & welcoming. Our tour guide on 3 trips was an American living in Laos married to a Laos lady. What I would definitely recommend is like you say he needs to be a mechanic but also paramedic! Depending on the rout you take you could be in some pretty rough & remote country! My mate ended up in a logging company聽 hospital with a smashed hand in the mountains Laos & it was lucky the Guide had a full med kit & was able to give roadside treatment to let us make it to the hospital which was basic to say the least!

Mate, couple of points
1....do you intend doing the full 3 countries rout?
2....if some of your friends are off roads novices & are doing the real rout you need to get them to get some practice in, cos its not easy in some stages especially Laos. On our trip (5 guys) 2 of us were fully off road people & 3 were experianced on road bike guys. Only 2 of us made it all the way through. One smashed hand ( still cant bend 2 fingers) 2 other mates eventually gave up 3 days in & got taken to Vientiane Laos by pick up truck. 100% sure you will enjoy it though!!
