Cell Chargers

RTLisSB
Greetings,

Has anyone on the forum ever needed to replace a cell phone charger/cable while in Vietnam? If so, are these easy to find for a Samsung S7? How about MacBook cables?

Best regards,

Roger

All readily available, OEM & copy. hundreds of small shops & some big shops like聽 Th岷 Gi峄沬 Di 膼峄檔g. I just replaced my Samsung Galaxy聽 A01 charging cable (not genuine) & it cost 80k VND & it works just fine.

Sounds like to me you have either never been to Vietnam or have a very limited exposure to life here to ask a question like that. This country is cell phone central & fake stuff heaven & everything is available here & you dont have to look hard to find it.

Just Like GOB says they are everywhere, at side of road selling led circle lights, BT speakers, cables, chargers, case at big intersections, along every road there are multiple phone accessory shops,

Hi Roger. Yeah, these cables are everywhere, but a word of advice.

Advisable to buy your cables from either a Samsung or Apple official retail/repair outlet. To do otherwise is akin to spending a dollar to save a dime. The counterfeits, in my experience, either A) don't last for very long, or (worse) B) the pin-outs at the USB end don't align with the pin-outs at the component end (YIKES!).
Then again, you might get lucky and have no problem(s) with knock-offs.

I am knock off central & love it!!1f602.svg T shirts, trainers, & especially reading glasses & sun glasses. If I have them for more than a week without losing them, sitting on them, leaving them at a coffee shop & forget what shop it was I count that as a bonus. Its an age thing I think. I once lashed out & spent 300,000vnd on a really聽 expensive pair of sun glasses only to sit on them within a week. So back to getting them off the board from one of the street vendors from then on.

On a side note, I bought a braided tri ended cable, "C" "micro usb" "apple" seeing we have multiple devices such as tablets, phones, ear buds etc was only 58k + delivery I bought 2 - I use one with my samsung fast charger and the other is for bike's usb so can power/charge phones, ear buds while on a trip - 2 years in and they work great.

hey my next door neighbour set fire to his house after he bought cheap china rechargable batteries lol聽

On the other hand Samsung origional S7 used to burst into flames as well

Plus have you seen how VN plug things in? ive seen 9 devices all plugged into one wall outlet with a crazy combo of聽 3 way adaptors, and 2 x 2500w electric bbq plates being used on a cable that I wouldnt plug a drill into - you only have to look at the street wiring to know some freaky stuff is going to happen.

Yes, I have seen things like that! Also, not a single VN home I have lived in has a ground wire. Some of the newer electrical outlets have a three-prong-plug receptacle, but if you open the receptacle cover you will find that there is no third wire routing that third prong to earth. Many newer electrical cords have three prong plugs, as do newer power bars. I suspect that is why the three-prong-receptacles were installed, to accomodate these newer plugs. I asked a VN (ahem) "electrician"聽 why this was so. His reply was that I could put the third wire in myself. sigh.

And be careful buying those supposedly LED light stringers. LED bulbs have a voltage of anywhere from 2 to 3.5 vdc. Once I opened one of those power supplies/converters and was shocked (not literally) by what I saw. No step down converter, no voltage regulator, no fusing/breaker. What was there was 4 diodes, which converted the raw 240 vac to raw vdc. But by using diodes to rectify the ac voltage, what you get is
240vac X 1.414 = 350(!)vdc.
A lethal jolt, just waiting to happen. If indeed LEDs are used (though I suspect they are small incandescent bulbs), they get the string to work by linking the LEDs in series and incorporate (heat emitting) resistors to drop the voltage to a level which the bulbs can tolerate.

I am not at all against knock-offs. I don't expect my counterfeit shorts/sneakers/sunglasses/etc to lead to my (or another's) ultimate demise, nor to brick my electronic device(s).

Caveat emptor, indeed.

My fairly modern villa (about 30 years old) in France had no earth either, so suppose the Vietnamese might have taken that from the colonial days. I have had built 2 houses & one love hotel (nh脿 ngh峄) here in the sticks & dont even ask about the electrics on any of them!!

Only buy Macbook chargers in an Apple retailer, like Futureworld in Saigon. Fake chargers have very different internals. There is no added tax like the US, so my iPad cost 10% more than retail, but Calif tax is 8.5%, so same same.聽 Computers and iPhones have more markup, and there are never sale prices here.

Here is a website with local prices.

Nice surprise I'm sure.

I was thinking that I'd buy an extra before I come over, but I take it from the replies that it isn't necessary.

Cheers,

How about newer places, say 2018 or 2019; would they have ground wires?
