Music Around Saigon ( not sadistic torturing of animals i.e Karoake )

GuestPoster288

I play occasionally in tribute bands when they need a lead guitarist, Pink Floyd etc, unpaid of course.
So was wondering if anyone knows of venues that play mostly Trad jazz although all genres are of interest.
Am NOT looking for work of any sort,聽 do not need need or want it, so purely for enjoyment.
Any place where musicians gather to jam a little just for the hell of it without being surrounded by half dressed girls or tone deaf singers who think they are Elvis.

I love the thread title, Pink Floyd and jazz is nice so I'm definitely going to search You Tube for Trad Jazz. "surrounded by half dressed girls or tone deaf singers"聽

Unfortunately i have no experience in this area.

My neighbours are torturing chickens as we speak. Except for this one woman who is quite adept at squeezing rats. Do chickens have balls?

I only know about this venue:

Sax n Art Jazz Club
28 膼. L锚 L峄, B岷縩 Ngh茅, Qu岷璶 1, H峄 Ch铆 Minh
(Phone number on Google Maps listing)

It was recommended to me by the 'cool cats' I jam with in 膼a虁 N膬虄ng.

I've walked by about a dozen times now, using that street as a 'shortcut' from Ben Thanh to the Opera House area, but I've only peeked in the front door once.

They officially open about the same time I'm putting on my CPAP mask for the night.

I don't know if they have such informal jam sessions, but I've read (on a Facebook page??) that they sometimes have guests sitting in.

Since you aren't in a hurry to earn money, hanging out there for awhile might could possibly maybe lead to an invite.

Please update in this thread when you learn more about anyplace you like.

I'm still trying to find just the right keyboard player for a duo.

If I find somewhere I'll update the thread but so far not looking good. I thought of renting a club for a night once a month for the purpose of getting musicians together but could never find enough that wanted to play.

I do know of an excellent keyboard player/pianist that played as a studio musician, taking over when the band being recorded couldn't actually play the song well enough. He retired early and lives here now. His main passion is blues. I don't know if he is interested in playing again other than for his own relaxation but I will mention it to him. Nice guy and down to earth.

Went over to see my keyboard guy early this morning, he has a remote villa just to the S East of HCM.
Has a nice studio set-up, 80 track mixer, iMac running DAW's, HI multi-disc production tower, Marshals, range of high end keyboards, Drum Master, synths etc etc. He wasn't interested in playing in public sadly but did say that if you have any original songs you would like to commit to disk he would be willing to help. No fee or anything, just for something to do.

Is the LP Custom in your profile pic yours..?

Well spotted.
Yes. It's a '68 all original and bought it in 1970 still new. Did change pickups for a while but as the guitar aged and the mahogany opened up I went back to the original Humbuckers. Heavy as hell but sustains forever. Tried Fenders as per PF but prefer the feel of Ebony to Maple so just matched the sound by using Marshals, pre-sets etc.

Karaoke - there is bad and good. Drunk men at bars, obviously can't sing a note. Pop music in booths in splashy karaoke clubs, like Lost in Translation, I don't get that.

But in the poor hems, to the traditional music of the Mekong, that's the soul of the people. Families singing songs from their childhood. Love stories mostly, as I understand. Nothing reminds me better in some romantic way of my new life, an outsider in a foreign culture.聽 :|

Thanks Gobot, now I feel bad about squeezing rats and chicken balls. :(

Wow, I envy you!聽 :o Did you ever regret not getting a '59 back then? It probably would have been聽 cheaper than the custom...聽  I have a '95 standard, took some time to get used to its 4,3kg. I'm guessing yours is closer to 5?

Good guess, 5.1, none of that chambered crap.
I bought it from a guitar shop about to go bankrupt so sold off what he could before it was all grabbed by bailiffs. He had a '59 with PAF's but couldn't afford it at the time. :-((
Mine has quite a history. My first wife died suddenly, no warning, blood clot. One minute smiling listening to the Stones, wacky backy, vodka etc, next minute dead in my arms. After she died I didn't handle it well, pretty much went off the rails. 2 yrs drunk. Lost my house, my business, my vintage cars, everything I had worked for just about all was grabbed by the banks and the courts. Didn't care at the time.
Luckily the Gibson was at a club ready for the next gig when it happened and the guy kept it for me, it was the only thing that wasn't seized by the vultures simply because they couldn't find it.
Eventually sobered up and reclaimed it. None of this 'wake up one morning and deciding to change my life shit', just a slow rebuild of what was left of my life, cleared my bankruptcy debts etc.
Since then wherever I have gone the Gibson has gone with me, kind of kept me from loosing the plot聽 聽 聽( which I still do occasionally ).
