building in Belize

We have just purchased a rural property in Belize near Hopkins and I will be going there near the end of April to begin preparations to build a home.聽 I am familiar with construction so will be managing the project myself (including doing my own electrical and plumbing) but really need references for other trades.聽 I have already found someone to do site preparation and excavation, driveway construction, but really need a concrete contractor to begin with and masonry as well. Any recommendations out there?

AL Construction is a major supplier of construction materials in Sourthern Belize. Their headquarters is in Mya Beach. They have a major concrete supply division located on the Southern Hwy near Independence. Albert Loewen is the owner. I have know him and done business with him several times. He will know what contractors are good and which to stay away from.

Google AL Construction for contact/phone information and ask for him.

Thanks Will,聽 really appreciate the tip.聽 I did come across AL Construction in my Google searches but did not know what kind of experience I may have with them - or any other name I came across - and was hoping for some endorsement from someone who had already dealt with them.聽 So thanks!聽 That gives me a good start.聽 Perhaps our paths may cross once we are down in Belize more often.聽 Cheers!

You may need to check with BEL as to connect to the grid the work has to be done, or examined by one of their listed Belizean electricians. Also to be your own contractor may require you to get a self employed work permit. Construction is one of the categories that mostly is reserved for Belize workers. If you simply intended to physically build your own home then there could be a few repercusions from the immigration and聽 also the works departments. Trying to be helpful not just聽聽being negative.
