Driving to Belize through Mexico Suggestions? Advise?
Has anyone done this and would you have recommendations. I am an older single woman with two dogs. I'd drive there so I have a car and can transport some household items. The plan is a permanent move.
Thanks,
Carol B

Hi Carol,
We鈥檝e driven from Alberta to Belize, and back, quite a few times. We travel with two dogs.
Last trip was just before covid, in the fall 2019. We鈥檒l drive again as soon as our border and the Belize border open, and after we get our second covid shot.
You can message me. I鈥檇 be happy to share our experiences.
Some of us might be able to caravan...would be an interesting adventure

I'm going to keep my eye on this topic.
Same habitat there as in Colorado. I once had family living in Edmonton and also a best friend, so I have travelled here lots in my past.
So happy to learn of your driving through Mexico. Are you in Belize now, or Alberta?
I think my drive won't happen until Fall, 2021. I am flying to Belize in June to locate a place to rent.
Let's keep in touch.
Carol
This is wonderful news. When might you want to drive? I am thinking Fall 2021.

I鈥檓 sending you a message.
The driving part was not fun (driving a big RV with 4 dogs on rough roads, towing a pickup behind us, not speaking Spanish, and following a very dated book on Mexican RV parks), but Mexico was wonderful. By the time we reached the Belize border, we were sad to be leaving Mexico.
My #1 piece of advice is to start following ioverlander.com. We didn't discover this fantastic site until 3/4 of our way through Mexico. Had we discovered it earlier, it would have made our trip a lot easier. If you'd like to read about our journey you can check out the blog from our trip here:
Take your time, have fun, and soak up Mexico (once the borders are open and the virus has settled down).
Carol
聽 for any longer than have to ..... belize opens the border in june聽 (supposed to) i plan to be聽 one of the first in聽 聽 聽i love belize聽 i will be moving there for good
Thanks for letting me know of your plans. Best wishes with your travel across Mexico and to Belize.
My move will take longer as I am just beginning the process. So I am flying there in Early June to check out rent potentials and locations. I am thinking south of Belize city towards Dangriga and Hopkins area but will also check out Placencia.
Then I will come back and start organizing for a move in mid-Fall.
Let's keep in touch and see where we each land.
Regards, Carol
Coco
When are you planning to drive? IMy plan is in the Fall after the weather cools down so probably in November or December.
Thanks for telling all of us!

Carol - we are thinking of end of April or May if the land board is open.

I feel that the central route through Mexico is much safer than the Gulf Coast route. (Del Rio/Ciudad Acu帽a or Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras crossings)
Can鈥檛 speak to the western routes.
Happy and safe travels!
We are interested in the Caravan or sharing the plane with others.
We are 2 adults, Noodles medium dog and 2 cats
My husband and I may be making this journey soon.聽 What鈥檚 the name of your guide and contact info?
Thanks,
Mark and Cyndy

Recommend you don鈥檛 do the drive by yourself
My brother and I drove a truck down two years ago to leave at my place in Belize.聽 5ft 10; 230 lbs. athletic. Boxed. Good with vehicles.聽 Brother 6 ft. 280 lbs. Former sniper and police officer.聽 I felt hesitant driving in Mexico.
It was a fun trip but my head was turning all of the time
If your going.
Car- have all belts replaced. All fluids replaced. New battery if old. Good spare tire.聽 Extra fluids. Oil, radiator, steering, brake etc. water. Air pump and battery jumper
Don鈥檛 drive in the dark. Be off the road by dark. Stay on the major highways.
Major towns are 2 to 4 hours apart. Don鈥檛 go to the next town unless you can make it before dark
Pick hotels that have gated parking. Check out the Fiesta chain of hotels.
Make sure you remember to stop at all three at the border.聽 Passport, car sticker, and import inspection. These are at three different locations. Get your car insurance on line.
Recommend you enter at Nuevo Laredo in Texas. Stop in San Luis Potos铆.聽 If you had times go to the waterfalls. Stay in the center of Mexico. Take the outer circle around Mexico City. Stay along the coast at ???.聽 Then stay at Chetumal. If you stay in Belize this will be one of your main shopping and entertainment cities to go to.聽
Get overseas emergency health insurance. Also coordinate with a US accountant to make an annual payment into Medicare and Medicaid.聽 If you don鈥檛 maintain this you will lose it. You will return to live in the US at some point.聽 There are no retirement homes in Belize.聽
Mexico鈥檚 highways are better than the US highways.聽 Bring about $800 to cover tolls.聽 Make your currency exchange in Nuevo Laredo.聽 Take about $2,000 converted to Pesos.
Mexico is beautiful but with pets.聽 Push to get through it. Take time to do the breakfast buffet at the hotels. Great food.
Once you cross into Belize plan to pay tariffs and get car insurance. This may take you 3 to 4 hours at the border.
Take vehicle ownership papers.聽 Insurance papers. Check ahead on the tariff on the car. If your not going thru the QRP program you may have to pay 70% of your vehicles value as a tariff.聽 If you have a $40,000 SUV you may have to pay $28,000 in tariff.聽 You will want to haggle.聽 When you think you have haggled enough ask to talk with the next person in charge and haggle more. This may be your first bribe moment.
Depending on where your going in Belize you may want to plan to stay at a hotel in Belize somewhere. Although it is a small country it takes a while to move around.
Have fun.聽 Have someone ride with you.聽 They can fly back.
We used Allianz Global for our foreign travel insurance.聽 Recommend you buy their annual package.
Make your money exchange in Laredo, not Nuevo Laredo.
Also believe there are two entry points.聽 Research which is best for you.聽 See if the pets determine which entry point to use.
Take a sweater or wind breaker.聽 It gets chilly in the middle of Mexico.聽 Your at higher altitudes.
At the Belize entry into Chetumal, there will be two entry points, one for commercial and one for individual.聽 Find out which one you need to go through with your car.
Have a good trip.
