Raising kids the local way in Dominican Republic

Hello everyone,

Raising children as an expat in Dominican Republic means discovering new parenting habits. School routines, discipline, food habits, independence, social life… many things may work differently in Dominican Republic compared to your home country.
In order to help fellow expats and soon-to-be expats to adapt, we invite you to share your insights:

What has surprised you most about raising kids in Dominican Republic?

How would you describe the local daily routine for kids?

Have you adopted local habits, or do you mix them with your own culture?

How do your kids navigate growing up between cultures? Do they feel local, expat, or both?

Do you face any challenges, or want to share any funny moments, or cultural misunderstandings?

Share your story, your tips, or your doubts to help expat parents and soon-to-be parents in raising kids in Dominican Republic, the local way.

Thank you for your contribution.

Excellent and interesting topic! But...alas, no children. And still stuck in the U.S. but hoping to escape in two years! But it would be interesting to know how well the schools are equipped and what is needed for future donations. 🥰

@Cheryl

Well I spent four and half years with a young teen there.

It was fine, I found an international school with teachers from all over the globe so some spoke English. My teen had to learn the language on the job so to speak but that was an experience well worth it.

For us it was an enjoyable and bit more relaxed school experience. Classes were held sometimes in rooms that were open aired and school fun days were held at the local beach! My teen got to meet and make friends with other teens from across the globe as well as make local friends. It was an enriching time.

I am grateful for the experience we had and the friends we made!
