In a recent discussion on another thread, we were talking about shipping prices.聽 On average and for the sake of this thread,聽 it costs聽 US $5 per pound to ship items from Miami to the DR.

So the question is:

What item or items are worth the US $5 per pound shipping cost????

I will start:

M&M's, preferably plain old chocolate M&M's
Good quality chocolate
Dress pants that fit me

Like I said before a constant supply of real sweet potatoes.
I will add 90% dark chocolate as it is the only one as a diabetic that I can eat and I miss chocolate.

What about furniture and electronic items? Would it be more economical to ship a living room set from the U.S. or buy one in the DR? One quote I got was for about $3000 to ship a living room and a bedroom set in a 20-40 ft container. Yikes!
A big screen TV cost about $300 to ship says a friend.

They are correct. Unless shipping聽 your one time container with your residency (needs to be done with in 6 months)it is cheaper to buy most things here rather than shipping. Remember the import tax will kill and add 28% or more to the cost of the item and that is before shipping.聽 Also when shipping from the US you have no warrente on the items.

Great points Bob, if you are bringing in a container based on your residencia there are some limitations on what you can bring. Make sure you know the rules.

Some items are definitely worth buying here.聽 We use propane stoves to cook for the most part.聽 Your stove from the USA may need to be fitted out with a propane kit. You do NOT want to cook with electric stoves here!聽 And few people will use electric dryers either.聽聽

Do your homework before shipping anything. On that note - the price of TV's聽 has dropped dramatically in the last few months. I am pretty sure it is no longer worth it to try to get one into the country unless it is a fabulous deal!!!!

It was announced that returning Dominicans can bring up to US $3,000 in from December 1 to January 5th I believe without duty or taxes.聽 We will see a lot of聽 items entering this year I am sure.

During December聽 employees in聽 "formal" employment will be receiving a 13th paycheck.聽 They will get 1/12 (to a ceiling) of their annual salary in December,聽 tax free.聽 We have seen prices go up at Christmas time as this money comes into the economy!

Thanks for the info Bob and planner.

I have a fabulous TV so I'm not gonna part with that. The apt. I found already has a bed, a dresser, a couch, and a dining room table with chairs.

So all I need is a headboard, 2 end tables with lamps, a loveseat, a recliner, and a center table. You figure these things might cost about $2000 in the DR? And where is a good place to get these items (on the NE coast)? Mine's are so nice though.

Next week I'm going to the Dominican Consulate to get info and/or apply for the temporary residency program.

Also if you are going for your residency you might consider shipping a half container... again tax free (or almost)

Back to the topic of the thread:

It used to be that I would kill for a yam!聽 No not a sweet potato and not a batata, not the same.聽 I would have paid US 5 to import but that is not legal.

But now....... da da da da..... I buy them at聽 Bravo here in Santo Domingo. And I am eating one RIGHT NOW........wooo hoooo聽 the little things that make us happy.
