I love what you are doing Julian.  Keep up the great work. An Expat club, so to say, is a great idea.  A circle of friends is a necessity no matter where you live.  Being an expat in Nica and not speaking the language can tarnish the experience. Been there done that!  Maybe organizing a monthly get together will further the positive experience for these expats.  There was a group of Americans that met almost daily at a hamburger joint, owned by an American, in the White Towns.  You always saw Americans at this rest for lunch.  Anyway, just wanted to tell you that you are on the right track.

Looking forward to getting to know folks. Arriving June 4 & departing July 7, then I will make necessary arrangements to actually relocate. Can't wait to find out what's going on.

What's your itinerary?   Where do you plan on staying?  What towns?

Hi Bhavna, Thank you so much for replying. I think - being so strongly advised not to go out and come home at night time - I am mainly looking for day trips of different sorts (naturewise as well as more cultural stuff). It does not have to be action packed or spectacular:)
Do you have any ideas of where to look?

Julien, Congrats.  I have not been to Nica, YET, but plan to come soon. A "meet up in Nicaragua" page is an excellent idea.  I especially like that the categories that you have included.  I wonder whether it would be a good idea, or would be possible, to group events and activities according to the region (25 km radius, for eg., or however far it is easy to travel).    BTW, have you heard of the Hash Harriers; a "drinking group with a running (or walking) problem.  There is a kennel in most major cities of the world.  It would be great if any Hash kennels joined your initiative.  I am from the Nanjing China kennel, and currently walking with the Winnipeg, Canada kennel.

We took some tours out of Granada.  We toured the Isleta's, Omotepe Island,
The Volcano overlooking Granada, and of course the buggy ride tour of Granada.
That took us about 4 days to explore all.  The horse carriage ride was about 1hour.

While visiting the Isleta's, hopefully you will learn about Lake Nicaragua.  As I know, the only fresh water lake in the world inhabited by salt water fish.   Plus there is a speci of fish in the lake found nowhere else in the world. 

A must is dinner at this restaurant near the lake that serves a fried fish dinner, al la Tipetapa
Except it has the bone still in.  This rest has dirt or sawdust floor with fans all over the place.
It's a very popular rest in Granada.  I do not remember the name.  Ask about it, all cabbies
Know this place.  They also serve beef, pork and many treditional Nica dishes.  Try the Carne Asada if you like beef.  Or just order a Filet Mignon for less than $12.00.  For a light pork  fare
Try the Vigaron.   Spelling may be off but it's pronunciation should be spot on.
Enjoy Nica. It's people are wonderful and very friendly.

If you are in Managua, and in stage 2 acculturation, feeling lonely, homesick, and displaced, I would strongly encourage you to join the Hash Harriers for a walk or run.  Though each individual group has a unique dynamic, in Nanjing, the Hash made the difference between staying and enoying China for 4 years, or leaving after a year.  It was a social outing, a network, and soon enough, friends.

Good idea! I have not found one in websearch so far. Do you know if there is a club in Managua?

From this link it appears that the Managua Kennel has not been active since 2009.  Time to get it up again!  Call on the Galapagos Kennel, and I know they will welcome you.  They probably still Hash monthly on Saturdays at 14:30.  I apologize if I mislead you about the Managua group.  If you could find out which pub they were affiliated with, that would be helpful for you.
