Coronado Beach Area

energyparadigmllc

We are looking at the Coronado area as a possible retirement location. We are wondering about the following.

  1. Is the beach there swimmable, and as a diver, are there reefs there or nearby to dive?
  2. It looks like the real estate for sale in Coronado indicates backup generators. Is this for the condo building or by condo?
  3. Is the water drinkable, or is a water filtration system recommended?
  4. Is there a cycling community in Coronado?
  5. Are there vets in or nearby Coronado?
  6. Are there a lot of children living in Coronado? We like kids, but would like a fairly quiet atmosphere in the pool areas and beach.
  7. If we decide to live in nearby Gorgona, is Coronado easy to access?
  8. Is there a lot of kayaking in Coronado?
  9. What level of services does the primary medical clinic in Coronado provide? Is the clinic a 24 hour clinic?
  10. What are the average costs for homeowners' insurance, property taxes, and car insurance?

Hi energyparadigmllc

I'm no expert on Coronado but have been there a couple of times and stayed a week last September and looked at some houses as it's on our radar for retirement. Since these boards are pretty inactive, I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.

Is the beach there swimmable, and as a diver, are there reefs there or nearby to dive? Unless you're very wealthy and can afford a beach front property you'll find the beach access is very limited due to said mansions and resorts along this area. There is beach access but you just have to park on the street and walk down long alleys and when you get there you may have to walk over large rocks or very steep stairs. The beach itself is usually a pretty small area and there is no shade. The good news, you'll most likely have it all to yourself. We had our older mother-in-law with us on this trip and I spent a few hours one day exploring and out of the numerous access points only a couple were something I'd even think about letting her try. Playa Caracol has the best beach area in my limited experience. We also spent a day at Bikini Beach Bar in Grogona and that beach was nice as well. The rest of the time we just hung out at the pool at our airbnb. There are high rises in Gorgona with nice beaches but that's not our thing.

It looks like the real estate for sale in Coronado indicates backup generators. Is this for the condo building or by condo? I've never experienced it but have been told and read that electricity can sometimes go off for no reason every now and then so that's the reason for the generators.

Is the water drinkable, or is a water filtration system recommended? Water is supposed to be filtered but everybody still buys the big bottled water. Even our realtor recommended that.

Is there a cycling community in Coronado? Seen a few people on bikes, not a lot.

Are there vets in or nearby Coronado? Not sure if you're talking about for pets or former armed service members but I'm sure theres both lol. My wife is a disabled vet from the army.

Are there a lot of children living in Coronado? We like kids, but would like a fairly quiet atmosphere in the pool areas and beach. Didn't see a lot of kids but saw a few on beach scouting day.

If we decide to live in nearby Gorgona, is Coronado easy to access? It has a security gate access but if you tell them you're going to a restaurant or something, they'll let you in.

Is there a lot of kayaking in Coronado? Haven't see any of that

What level of services does the primary medical clinic in Coronado provide? Is the clinic a 24 hour clinic? Don't know but there's a lot of older people there so I'm sure it's adequate.

What are the average costs for homeowners' insurance, property taxes, and car insurance? Can't say for sure but have been told it's cheap compared to US.

I have to say all in all, I was a little disappointed in Coronado but that may be just because my expectations were a little too high and the extreme lack of beach access. You may have a different feeling though so I encourage you to go see it for yourself. Good luck!

Hi, as someone who has been to Panama several times and is planning to retire to Panama, here are responses to consider for Coronado living:

Is the beach there swimmable, and as a diver, are there reefs there or nearby to dive?  Beach is swimmable. Not sure about diving spots. Nearby (45 minute drive to Chame you will find great surfing)

It looks like the real estate for sale in Coronado indicates backup generators. Is this for the condo building or by condo? Yes, condo. buildings and apartment complexes generally have backup generators and water tanks

Is the water drinkable, or is a water filtration system recommended? Yes, water is drinkable

Is there a cycling community in Coronado? Yes

Are there vets in or nearby Coronado? Yes

Are there a lot of children living in Coronado? We like kids, but would like a fairly quiet atmosphere in the pool areas and beach. Panamanian families have houses in Coronado and visit during weekends so there are more children during the weekend. During the week the place is populated by retirees (mostly expats) who live there.

If we decide to live in nearby Gorgona, is Coronado easy to access? Driveable via Uber or car

Is there a lot of kayaking in Coronado? Have not seen but not sure

What level of services does the primary medical clinic in Coronado provide? Is the clinic a 24 hour clinic? There is a well equipped clinic as well as dental clinics. Critical care patients can be taken to Panama. A paid for ambulance service is available. Check with your insurance as to how much would they cover. If you have a pensionado visa, you get a good discount for medications, doctor visits, and other related medical services

What are the average costs for homeowners' insurance, property taxes, and car insurance? Property taxes are 0.05% of sale value. Car insurance varies based on what type of car you have - you will need to check with an insurance agent - lots of them around. Not sure of homeowners insurance but it is very reasonable.
