Blocking Unsolicited Messages

NothingNew

A while ago I decided to stop unsolicited messages after I received a long and meandering message in French (of all languages) critical of my posts and stating that "all countries have their negatives and positives."

Since it came from someone in France, I've worked in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Mozambique and they too have negatives and positives, would I recommend retirement there? No.

This is only my opinion on those countries and elsewhere in the world. I've only cautioned people to do "due diligence" and consider the source of the information--and the possible motives for that information

Panama is not what it once was, Bocas del Toro was under Martial Law last year and the government shut down the internet (sound familiar) in that province.

If I didn't marry here 35+ years ago I think that there's more attractive locations. If you want to live in a place like Boquete because it's "cooler"  than most of Panama, may I recommend southern Argentina? Cheaper and more breathtaking than most of Alaska.

But don't criticize others because they have a different opinion. Again, it's my opinion and I've always said use due diligence.

I really appreciate this comment. I knew there was a situation in Bocas with the banana company but I sure didn’t know about martial law and the internet thing. I met a man on the airplane last month who lives there and he never mentioned anything about that to me. I will investigate this further.

Thank you for your post. My husband and I are considering Panama for retirement. We read many positive things about the country. I’m weary of the raining season. Safety and finding a place close to a major hospital is a priority.

I don’t understand why some people are not respectful of different opinions nowadays. Be well!

Yes. The president of Panama suspended the constitution in Bocas del Toro and sent in the police and AERONAVAL, suspended internet service--I know that Starlink costs more upfront but at least they can't turn it off as easily as Tigo and Más Móvil.

From the AFP about the Internet. An American woman was also dragged from her car at a roadblock but later released.

Thanks for your comments. The problem with Panama and healthcare is that first class healthcare requirements almost limits you to Panama City.

Panama is not like even rural areas or even Alaska that have highly developed air ambulance and evacuation services/insurance. Although places like David in Chiriquí have hospitals like Mae Lewis and Chiriquí Hospital depending on the medical needs you still might need to go to Panama City.

You make an excellent point that if medical services are a requirement it doesn't hurt to have your doctor (s) in the United States speak to the doctors in the foreign country you're considering. You'll need a release of confidential information (ROI) in the United States and you may have to pay for a medical translator/interpreter, but worth the cost.

Good luck with your move.
