Job Field for My Situation in Germany?

Hello everyone,

I鈥檓 looking for advice on a potential career change.

I have a diploma as a computer hardware technician but only worked in that field for less than a year. Since then, I鈥檝e mostly done office jobs unrelated to IT.

I moved to Germany (D眉sseldorf) about 7 months ago for a labor job in the transportation field, hoping it would be temporary while I transitioned to something less physically demanding. However, working 9-10 hours a day has left me too exhausted to improve my German (currently A1-A2 level), and I鈥檝e had no luck securing less physically demanding jobs despite many applications.

Given that I鈥檓 fluent in English, is there a field (besides transportation and logistics) where I might find a position that鈥檚 less draining and allows me the time and energy to work on my German skills?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Your job chances generally depend on (besides German language skills, which is of course the most impotant factor!) your skills and experience in the field. From your message above, I cannot see any are where you have sufficient knowledge to justify, for an employer, the additional effort and risk of hiring a foreigner (over a similarly skilled EU-citizen). You'd have to be lucky to find something!

However, finding your current job too tiring and wanting to have less stress in a new one might, in the eyes of a potential employer, be seen as lazyness and not incline them to hire you!

Unfortunately, few such jobs exist although one would think there are plentiful if you believe what you read on social media.聽 The reality is that good English is often expected - but in addition rather than as an alternative to German. Good Jobs where one won鈥檛 need German are usually limited to a few fields like in IT and some sorts of engineering. But even in these fields, they are the exception rather than the rule and one will be at a competitive disadvantage over one鈥檚 competitors by not having strong German.聽 Expecting to get lucky is not really much of a plan. Likely you will simply have to find the time and energy to improve your German if you really want to have much of a chance at all.
