I am a U.S. citizen and am planning to leave. I would also like to know if there are any research professionals in Germany that can assist with applying for Citizenship By decent.

German citizenship by descent is, under normal circumstances, possible only fo kids of German nationals - were your parents German?

The only exeption I know of is people, whose German citizenship was cancelled due to discrimination (e.g. by the Nazis). If your ancestors renounced their German citizenship voluntarily (or took on another citizenship, which automatically leads to loss of the German one), you are almost certainly not German.
