The story behind the statue.. do you know it?

http://teakdoor.com/Gallery/albums/userpics/38226/P1020955.jpg

It is located on the Ibis hotel at the junction of Dosza Gyorgy Ut and Podmaniczky St. Near to the Heroes Sq.

Its suggestion of a pitiful demise is in stark contrast to the modern building and it's function, so I assume the site must have some prior and rather morbid significance. I haven't found any reference to it elsewhere, so any information would be appreciated.

Cheers

Don't know about it, so I may be wrong, but I suspect its construction and installation involved some EU grant**.

**Which means it has no real reason or purpose for being there.
Cynical.. where would we be without art in our cities?

I concur.

The statue name is:" soaring bronze siren"
the artist is Istvan Madarassy and the statue was built in the year of 1990, and it is just a statue nothing more.

Thankyou that's very helpful. Does "soaring bronze siren" translate as "sz谩rnyal贸 bronz szir茅na" is that what the piece is called in Hungarian? I can look at the work of Istvan Madarassy now and see if I can find more.
It is strange that it doesn't hold any significance to that location.. it is such a melancholy piece, perhaps just a reflection of the Hungarian psyche in general.
Thanks again.
No

No its name is in Hungarian lebegő bronzszir茅n

Thanks.. good info.
I must admit, that I never realized this sculpture (kinda left the country exactly when they built that hotel) and found nothing more about it online.
I like these kind of artwork in budapest though - whether paid by EU money or not!!
So, as to add to the value of this post, I found a few more here :-)

u-uh, sorry to have to admit, but I looooved them when I was a small kid in the eighties(i think). (My grandparents lived in K茅kgoly贸 u.). The link suggests, they may have to do with the name of the place 'v茅rmez玫'=blood meadow (was an execution place)
:-D
