Travelling while waiting for permesso鈥�. Long time coming

We have a valid type D visa for multiple entries to Italy also a passport that is accepted for 90 day visa free travel in Schengen but are also holding 鈥榬eceipt鈥� .聽 聽Can we travel freely in Schengen area whilst waiting for the permesso. Or does the 鈥榬eceipt鈥� override everything else.
