Thinking of Malta as a job..destination

zaklin

Hello everyone ,I am Greek and i live in Brussels for the last two months.I am 38 years old .I am an experienced production coordinator and casting manager at film and TV sector.I came to Brussels because i know that they choose this place for shootings because they offer some good incentives so i thought it would be a good opportunity for me to find a job but since i dont speak French that is a little bit difficult .I thought that i could work with my English at International Projects..but it didn't work yet.So i was thinking to move to another country and after i did some research i realize that Malta might be a good place for me since they talk English and also seem to be a filming destination. Can anyone quide me what should i do in order to find a job there? If anyone have any information regarding my sector? And if there is a potentiality there for my specialty? Also in case i can't find a job immediately regarding my specialty i can work in a bar or in a restaurant for a while for the living expenses..i use to do that job in Greece also before some years. Is this possible? Are there requests for jobs at the bars or restaurants?and is it possible to work with English.

Thank you in advance

it is indeed true that Malta seems to be popular for location shoots in recent years..as it is true that english is widely spoken here too. not sure if its the right place to look for work in this specialist field as it is a very small island....good luck though maybe some other posters have some comments to make too

Hi zaklin,

welcome to the forum.

As an insider you probably know that Malta does not have it's own film industry except for local Maltese productions.

The film industry uses Malta for it's scenery and historic sites. There is no contuinous filming going on , it is more sporadic that foreign companies come to Malta to shoot a film.

Having said that you probably know the international major players in the business yourself and can judge your job opportunities as a casting director.

Casting locals for films might also require knowledge of Malta and the Maltese language. Maltese speak Maltese , English is the second language. Jobs that deal with Maltese generally require speaking Maltese.

So I'm not sure how your chances of finding a job in the film industry would sum up.

Servicing in a hotel or restaurant is a seasonal business and not that well paid but you should be able to find work, especially in the summer. As it sounds like you would like to leave Brussels soon it might not be the best time of the year.

Cheers
Ricky

Thank you Toonarmy for the good luck wishes!
Thank you Risky for your reply and your comments.Yes i do know that Malta doesn't have any local productions..but as long as it has often foreign productions that's ok with me since i am a freelancer so even if i work in a film project or two in a year thats ok..since that will make me the opportunity to expand my film network and maybe i can be apart in another film project i another country for a while.Regarding the restaurant and bars you have right it is not a good season now..
Regarding the casting as long as they speak English even as a second language that's ok i mean i need only some basic conversations to do with them...the main thing is to cast the faces. But even if casting in not so easy for me i am also a production coordinator so i can be apart of the production team.
I ll send my cv at some production companies and see how it goes..
Thank you again!
