best home for your money

after moving to malta,is it worth putting my capital into a long term bond account, say for 3 to 5 years in the folorn hope of maybe getting some sort of annual income return.or do i keep my money in england.?聽 from what ican make out ,the rates on offer聽 from bov make just as grim reading as those on similar bonds here in england.i look forward to hearing others thoughts /advice on the matter.cheers from alf.

I think you should take qualified advice. However, also read this:

The European Central Bank (ECB) has cut its benchmark interest rate to new record low of 0.25%, down from 0.5%.

The move has come as a surprise to many analysts and as a result, the euro fell sharply while European shares and German government bond futures rose...........................
do you mean in euros or in sterling ?
euros or sterling the medbank, FCM bank and easisave from fimbank currently offer good rates (sure are better than UK and maltas main banks for fixed rate bonds...

easisave fimbank do a nice easy access account too at 2% FCM bank do the same plus an extra % if the funds arent touched for a yr

google is the best tool

short of good sound professional advice
Bear in mind you will pay 15% witholding tax on interest income, whereas can be paid gross in the UK and offshore
thanks everyone for replies. there is a lot to think on here. thankfully we still have two years down the line before we make the move but i'd like to get some initial spadework done,so to speak. thanks also for the links to the other banks, Toon.
The rates are certainly better than i have seen eleswhere, but in the case of one particular bank, based in the cayman islands, with one branch in st julians, and only been in operation a few years, i aint so sure.
by the way, do all banks in malta have to adhere to a financial protection scheme, where savers can be covered for up to 100k euros?anyway as i said alot聽 to plan ahead for,but looking forward to it all.
on a lighter note聽 away from all this financial stuff, outside my house at the moment, fireworks are blasting away, gangs of kids are yelling, dogs barking.
could just be malta, apart from it been freezing, windy, and peeing down with rain.
oh to be sat聽 at st julians band club with a bottle of cisk and a little plate of nibblies.cheers from alf
Yeah Alftupper miss the band club in St Julian's the nibbles glass rose bottle cisk the banter.
Am over for XMAS 17th to January 4th.
Xmas dinner in Maltese Mamma cant wait.
Get away from the rain in Ireland.
yes they belong to the scheme - but these days thats no guarantee anywhere.
have a great time聽 at xmas maltese cross.
only wish we could be over then too .
i know only too well what irish聽 winters are like ,i visit every year.
i have lots of family in newry co down.
in lots of way, malta reminds me of ireland inthe med.
it has its own infuriating ways, and customs.but deep down ,they are warm hearted people, who will chat to you .and ,most important in common聽 with the irish, like a drink.
enjoy your time and the craic.
cheers alf.
